All those cities are great but my answer would be Boston. You have great nightlife, vibrancy, and there is lots of camp sites around the city. Boston has lots of great shops and restaurant's. But living cost is a really high so that is the only negative. Although Chicago and Philadelphia are great cities also.

The sheer numbers dictate otherwise.

Fortune 500 Companies

NYC- 43
Chicago - 12
Philadlephia- 8

NYC has 6x the amount of skycrapers of Chicago whereas Chicago has 3x the amount of skyscrapers that Philaldephia has. Manhattan has 4x the amount of office space Chicago has, Chicago has 2x the amount of office space of Philadelphia.NYC has 3x the amount of people Chicago has, Chicago has 1.8x the amount of people of Philly.

You may not want to believe it but Philadelphia more closely resembles Chicago than Chicago resembles NYC.

Ya gotta let it go. Way too much thought on something that should have little to no meaning in yours or anyone else's life...

If you are living in Philadelphia or Boston, and you want to experience the vibrancy of NYC, you have to drive to NYC.

Not similar at all! Boston and Philadelphia have much more in common with New York than Chicago.

All three are great cities. Architecturally and culturally, Boston and Philly have more in common with NYC (Philly especially).

But, in terms of sheer activity/ things to do Chicago is closest to NYC. The areas immediately north of the loop looks nothing like Manhattan, but has more going on then anywhere in the other two.

The city is not as urban as NYC and doesn't have areas like UWS and Greenwich Village. But it is a step above Boston and Philly in terms of size, if not density.

San Francisco would also be a candidate to consider as well.
