Please vote....
I like Chicago but because of that pesky thing we all call Hollywood; I have to go with Los Angeles as being more influential.

This has probably been said already but...

depends what is important to you...lots of these cities are #2 in certain categories behind nyc... and nyc isn't #1 in all of them...

Chicago - publishing, transportation, finance, insurance, commerce, architecture, stock markets, conventions (vegas and orlando are 1,2)

DC - political power, defense, museums, embassies

LA - media, entertainment, international ports

Boston - education, medical

Houston - energy, ports, oil, space program

SF has no business on here, but Silicon Valley would be #1 in high technology

I agree, but I don't think Houston or Boston do either since we're talking about the #2 city. None of these three qualify in my eyes.

None of the biggest banks are Chicago-based. Architecture and conventions are irrelevent.

The Pentagon is not in DC proper, neither is the CIA.

LAs biggest media company is not based in LA proper, Disney is out of Burbank. Disneyland is in Anaheim. Not LA Proper.

The space program is in suburban Houston, so are most of the oil fields and the 2 biggest oil companies in America are not Houston-based.

LOL

Apparently, SF is not the only one that is propped up by its surroundings.

I agree on the banks comment but why on earth would you say conventions are irrelevant?

The only thing about Chicago publishing I know is that the University of Chicago has the largest publishing arm of any university in the US (a factoid I learned because of the Chicago style manual). I'm not in the biz though, so I don't know what else Chicago has, but I'm guessing it's lots.

"You are guessing?" If you do not know why do you even "open your mouth"? Anybody knows what "publishing" is done in Chicago?
