Long story short; I plan to relocate to Louisville, KY next year. I think it is one of America's best kept secrets. I went back to my native Hampton Roads, VA this week. I just really feel at home there. It's my hometown i love it even with all its problems. Now i'm conflicted.

A few facts:

- I'm an African-American, Hampton Roads draws me because of the large middle-class African-American population.
- I plan to obtain a degree in management. Which area has better job prospects?
- I love friendly people. I've found both areas to be friendly.

Simply: Louisville, KY or Hampton Roads, VA?

I think the Hampton Roads area is also one of America's best-kept secrets.

So far Hampton Roads is beating Louisville. Guess people love the beach over the mountains.

What mountains? Louisville is not in the mountains.

Well, Hampton Roads isn't too far from mountains, either. Maybe a bit farther than Louisville, but certainly an easy drive to Virginia's beautiful mountains.

My pick is for Louisville. Not only do I like that Louisville has an extensive bike trail with the goal of looping it around the entire metro, but it has plenty of weekend trip opportunities, from Cincinnati to Indianapolis to Nashville, and even Chicago or St. Louis really isn't that far. DC/Baltimore is right next to Virginia, but really what else is in proximity? And cost of living is a lot better. You can get more house for the money and have a better quality of life since it frees up more disposable income.

Of course when you have children, the whole dynamic changes and then you kind of want to be closer to family. The time to get out and try new places is early on before the kids come.

I'd choose Louisville. A unique city with lots going on. Hampton Roads, not so much. Too suburban and bland for me. There seems to be a decent economy in the Hampton Roads area though.

I'm back. Well looks like this is becoming a reality other than a fantasy. I have a VERY slight chance of relocating with my family to Hampton Roads depending on a job situation. KY is pretty much set but the job may throw a wrench in that.
