Pittsburgh is down and going. Pilly is struggling with some positive outlook. In the long run Philly will be fine, with its old reputation and good connection to other major cities. The same can't be said about Pittsburgh. It has no reputation, is isolated and will continue to be more empty.
I've noticed Pittsburgh make a couple of those lists like best places to live or whatever recently but haven't seen Philadelphia make any lists. So my perception is Pittsburgh is doing pretty decent right now due to it's more diverse economy despite it's reputation and population loss/stagnation. Not sure how true that is but that's just kind of how I see it.
They're both doing alright, though not great. Their populations seem to be more or less stabilizing right now, so that's good and all. Philadelphia will probably benefit from its location and historical importance though, so I'd say Philly.
Philadelphia is a really cool city. Its not as cool as NY or DC, but those cities are both really close. Philly is bigger, has more stuff/transportation.
Pittsburgh has the O (a hot dog shop) which is awesome. I personally think Primanti brothers is overated. Good, but nothing really special. I went to a Penguins game last fall on a saturday afternoon. wanted to get something to eat downtown after the game. finally food a good pizza shop, but the downtown was dead on saturday night. took long enough to find that. I wouldn't have that problem in Philly. I mean I like Pittsburgh too, but it isn't as cool as Philly.
