I appreciate Chicago, it is obviously one of the most important cities in the US. However, from a waterfront perspective it offers little. I think the beaches are fine and the Chicago River offers a lot locally, it isn't very important beyond that. (EDIT: A lake view from a lakeshore condo is certainly nice)

The OP chose Chicago. SINCE it's the OP's thread, I would think the choice of Chicago would suffice. You don't get to change the thread......

I'm not sure I changed the thread. Especially since it originated in 2009.

But placing Chicago on here in the "city vs. city" invites debate, right? When someone offers a city in a certain category doesn't mean everyone has to agree with it.

Lake Michigan is a benefit to Chicago, though I can't really find any business or revenue that comes from it. I don't agree it offers anything of great importance to Chicago, other than a cooling factor in the summer.

Oceanic or near Oceanic waterfront cities that are important: (my ranking is completely subjective, feel free to challenge)

1. New York City
2. Miami
3. San Francisco/Oakland
4. Seattle/Tacoma
5. Los Angeles/Long Beach
6. San Diego
7. Boston
8. Houston
9. Norfolk/Virginia Beach
10.???

pretty good list

some others I think really good are Chicago, Tampa, and Baltimore

I would take either of those three over your 8 and 9 but on the whole a good list

I also don't see NYC as the best waterfront on this list

A good addition to this thread would be Buffalo, its waterfront may not be the best but it has radically improved since 2009.

Really? Half of the year the lakefront and river areas are literally bursting with activity. 24 beaches, the lakefront trails, restaurants, food vendors, concerts and festivals, parks, beach houses, fishing, boat and kayak rentals, the riverwalk with restaurants and bars, dozens of big boat tours and trips per day, Navy Pier, 10 harbors housing over 6,000 private boats, all the sports offerings.

Just surprised you would say the waterfront doesn't have businesses, revenue or offers much of anything locally or important.

The waterfront is probably the biggest defining factor for the city, and brings people to the shores spending time and money by the hundreds of thousands.

Thats a bit sloppy. I'm not sure what you were imagining constitutes a business based on the lake but the most obvious thing to start with is to see if there is a shipping port. The lake is not nearly as important as the rails or highway but it and the rivers and canals are all still active transport ways.

Was pretty unimpressed with Chicago's waterfront, especially after hearing about how indisputably awesome it is from everyone.

Since Milwaukee hasn't been mentioned, I'll include a link. Milwaukee certainly doesn't have the "best" waterfront in the US, but it has a stunning waterfront, that is utilized very well. Milwaukee's downtown is on Lake Michigan, so that's also a huge plus. Milwaukee also has a river running through it, that serves as a backdrop for shopping, condo living, restaurants, and walking venues. I'll include a link with pics of each. These can rival a number of city's waterfronts, and are pretty much unknown...unless you've been to Milwaukee. Great, great assets to the city.
