Someone who stole my identity a few years ago, lived in Stockton..I don't know which was worse losing some major assets or having people that know me look me up and think I actually ever lived in Stockton.. Those Id theft deals can leave a nasty stain.

Actually Sacramento is nice and diverse city. It is completely different from the rest of the central valley in terms of its economy. But i agree anything north of Sacramento can go.

Exactly! States run the gamut from homogeneity to heterogeneity among many fronts: economic, political, ethnic, geologic, religious, etc. My favorites are the most heterogeneous, like NY, CA, PA, MA, IL, WA.

But getting back to the question at hand, I'd like to rephrase it to "Which cities are anomolies in their states?" Some that I perceive:

Miami (FL)
Butte (MT)
Dubuque (IA)
Austin (TX)
Birmingham (AL)
Ashville (NC)
Vineland (NJ)
Duluth (MN)
Las Vegas (NV)
Branson (MO)
Cairo (IL)
Stamford (CT)
Biloxi (MS)
Gary (IN)
Pueblo (CO)
El Paso (TX)

Disclaimer: Some of these I have not been to, but my perception is based on what I have read or heard.

Eastern Kentucky and the eastern half of South Central Kentucky (where I'm originally from) is much poorer than the rest of Kentucky - in fact it's poorest region in all of North America and Western Europe.

Median Household Income, 2000

Percent of People below the poverty level, 2000

Percent of people with less than a 9th Grade Education

Eastern KY sticks out like a sore thumb (along with Mississippi Delta, Texas/Mexican Border, & South Dakota Indian Reservations)

Yes, it feels like entering a different realm but only because you had exited that one to begin with. Drive from the Bay Area to the Southland via 101 and there's not such a dramatic change.
