That's not what the thread is about.

I get it, for a city to have "soul" it must have alot of brick, or have no yuppies, or be in the Northeast. That's typical city-data criteria.

Good. You're catching on. I'm not so sure about the brick part, but too many Yuppies definitely choke the life out of a city.

SanFran is definitley nicer, but Philly has certain intangibles that blow SanFran away.

dude, both cities are gritty, old cities...

one has a high opinion of itself, the other a low opinion of itself

that said, SF is more world famous, but like someone said, Philly has character that is well known

i've spent a week in SF and was underwhelmed, maybe because i flew over there from JFK. its a very vibrant city, yes, there are people but its a much slower, simple, touristy scene. much more laid back . and the cab drivers spoke english??? its not east coast (so why compare to NY?) every lounge/bar was very west coast. it's just amazing how much love there is for SF...i don't get it

its probably better than philly, but not by much...i think LA is worth a trip back to Cali for a non naturist (me)

I AM FROM PHILADELPHIA...don't tell me I dont know about my own city. Do you know the Philadelphia accent? I hear it everyday. Who cares? Boston has its own accent, and so does New York. Just stating that its not just Philly that has a personality/authenticity.

I mean, you have to admit, the city is a funny place to live. Riding a trolley or bus is an adventure in and of itself. And the gay bars in Center City are by far the funniest. Where else can you go and have a ripped, 200 lb Asian DJ, blasting Madonna, yell out to a black muslim, "I want YOUUU!!!"? Or when my girlfriend ran into a little Italian lady in Center City and decided to give some lip, the lady put her purse down and replied, "Do you want a piece of this, honey?" Stuff like that happens in Philadelphia all the time, and it's just fun oberving everyday life there. It has so much personality. Do you think the show "Parking Wars" would be as funny anywhere else?
Yeah that would never happen in the Bay Area... all those straight, white people wouldn't want to ruffle their polo shirts.

I just don't consider vibrancy to be a bunch of 30 year old trust fund babies parked outside of cafes and gulping down bottles of Pellegrino. Some people actually like seeing children play stickball, girls skip double dutch, and kids go wild in streams of water blasting from a fire hydrant. Philadelphia has these things called "neighborhoods" that have "families" that are "middle class." We also do this thing called "work." Ever heard of that? We are a working class city and we're proud of that.
Excellent Post! I love Philly for it's authenticity and refusal to give up on it's people and traditions.
