Depends on the style of music. I am a die hard metal head. Death metal and black metal are my musics of choice. The one city that has influenced Death metal more than any other is Tampa, Florida. Others include LA, San Francisco, Chicago, Ft. Lauderdale, Dallas, New Orleans, and Washington DC.

Since most of you will be unfamiliar with the genres, ill stop there.

Equal

The big difference, though, is that SF had the music SCENE in the 60's--not LA. Everyone was going to Haight-Ashbury...
Everyone was going to the Sunset Strip too. Both SF and LA had the scene.

Aside from all the influential bands and music, it was the cultural and philosophical epicenter of the 60's movement, and music played the central role in that.
Again, I'd say it's equal. SF was just a nicer city, even in the '60s when LA was a much nicer city than it later became.

In the 90's I'd STILL say LA and SEA. Grunge and Gangsta rap ruled the 90's.

In the 60s and 70s was all Detroit. Motown was cranking hit after hit during those decades. Yeah, even when Motown moved to L.A. I still consider it a Detroit thing because Detroit is Motown not L.A. In the 80s L.A had all the glam rockers. In the 90's seattle hit it big with the grunge.

A lot of the soul music from the late 50 -60s came from Chicago as well.

Umm...L.A. has as good of a claim to the 90's as any decade. L.A. started gangsta rap, which was one of the most popular genres in the 90's.

20s chicago was pretty much like the motown of jazz this is where everyone came to record. 50s/60s Detroit..MOTOWN no doubt about it....Detroit has its rightful place in music hist then LA and then NY for disco/hiphop
