Quiet is subjective. Those neighborhoods are all pretty active (I might quibble with SW.) But, not like you would find in Piccadilly Circus, Champs Elysees, Ginaza, or even Michagan Avenue.

Kcmo-glad to hear you're liking it! The trees are sound barriers--but I know what ya mean. I don't like it either. The beltway feels like a conveyor belt. I'm not familiar with driving from Silver Spring, but know there is a very popular/safe Metro station in Takoma Park.

In DC, I've never been, but hear great things about the Washington Fish Market (on Maine Ave). When in Baltimore--be sure it check out Fell's Point (neighborhood), have lunch @ Harry Attmon's (Attman's Delicatessen - Baltimore Maryland - Corned Beef - Pastromi - Sandwiches - Lunch), & although expensive, the Aquarium is worth it. To escape the city, visit Blackwater (Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge - USFWS - Home). (I bet it's beautiful in the fall.) Also, near you is College Park. It's a nice little college town & you can find teas & organic & vegetation food (i.e. http://www.myorganicmarket.com) if you're into that.

And to feel like a local, be sure you learn the difference between eating crabs in DC/Baltimore & the Eastern Shore, indulge in Crab Imperial, & eat Old Bay on your french fries (& everything else).

(In case anyone is wondering, I'm 28 & was last in Maryland 3 years ago.)
