Sunbelt cities like Miami, Los Angeles, etc. I think its just a sunbelt thing (with some exceptions).

I always laugh when someone says "Yo I'm from ________ (Insert NYC Area Suburb)" and tries to act all hard, like get out of here with that.

I think LA is the gold standard here.

Just like Infamous said, LA, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, and a million other Sunbelt cities. Inner-city like suburbs or inner-suburbs as they call them(I think).

It's not just sunbelt cities. It's any major city. Chicago has a few suburbs that are rougher than major cities. Maywood, Illinois and Harvey, Illinois for starters. This also should not be a surprise.

Birmingham, Alabama has a suburb called Fairfield which consistently has one of the highest murder rates in the nation, especially for towns its size.

I laugh when I'm out east on Long Island, like somewhere 50 or so miles from the Queens border, and I see a local gangster wannabe teenager. You know my fiance and I have taught in the roughest areas of NYC....we laugh at those kids and say that we wish we could drop them off in Bed-Stuy--they wouldn't think they're tough or gangster anymore after that

This really depends on how you define 'suburb'. What would you consider a 'suburb'?

RANK CITY SCORE RANK CITY SCORE RANK CITY SCORE

2 St. Louis, MO 374.87
3 Oakland, CA 325.60

5 Flint, MI 295.20
6 New Orleans, LA 284.44

19 Cincinnati, OH 192.35
20 Dayton, OH 189.31
From the top 20 alone:
1) Only 3 cities are in California, only 1 of which is near LA (the other 2 are in the SF Bay Area). In the top 50, 6 cities are in California of which only 2 are anywhere near LA (San Bernardino and Comtpon), 3 are in the Bay Area (Vallejo, Oakland, Richmond) and Stockton. California makes up 12% of the top 50, but California is also 13% of the US population. Right in proportion to the US population.
2) 11/20 are NOT in the sunbelt but are rather in the north (55% of the top 20). In 2009, the Midwest and Northeast make up around 38-40% of the US population.

Offer a definition of what a suburb consists of, then it will be easier to analyze.

Judging from the most dangerous cities list, it seems as if the Northeast and Midwest are disproportionately represented on the list of most dangerous cities. At the same time, a higher proportion of the Northeast and Midwest live in metropolitan areas than the South, giving the South a much wider spread of crime over larger area both urban and rural.
