I think when people are bashing LA, they are bashing it mainly because of Hollywood. It could be that the people are jealous of the individuals fame or they could be like me, get tired of seeing them on tv 24/7
A bad American city would be Chicago. It's the nation's murder capital, has suffered the greatest population loss, is the most segregated city in America, it's the most polluted city, and has been rated America's most miserable city.
Oh, and the Governor is in jail, and the Mayor is on his way.

You really nailed that one
I don't think most people are jealous of L.A. It doesn't offer anything that most people couldn't do without. It has weather going for it, but that's pretty much it. In my opinion, Suburban L.A is A LOT better than the city. I don't care for the city at all, but I found the suburbs pretty fun.

I've known many travelers (family and friends) who bashed/hated Los Angeles and "Hollywood" was the least of their problems. Well Hollywood itself as seedy as it looked was part of the problem, LOL.
I've travelled with people from Europe to LA, and they all come to the city expecting it to look like Baywatch and be all glamorous when it is the complete opposite.
LA isn't a very tourist friendly city. It's a dump on the surface, and tourists are too lazy to explore all the great parts of the city.
It isn't like New York, San Francisco, Boston or Chicago where the cab dumps you in the city center and you're in the middle of it all.

Many parts of NYC are an absolute mess to look at. LA has tons more natural beauty than NYC. It's just that the infrastructure and layout of the city is unlike any other American city, including NYC. That's what makes it such a wonderful and unique place.
BTW, I don't mean to startle you, but your jealousy is showing. Again.

No, trust me, most people are just jealous. They'll try and deny it using every distracting and random thing they can think up, distancing themselves as much as they possibly can from the jealousy factor, but it's always there, right underneath the surface.
If I didn't live in LA and lived in a place like Chicagno or NYPuh-leez, I'd be pretty damn discontent myself.

Hmm...wouldn't the typical grid layout and highway-domination over thousands of square miles make Los Angeles the poster-child of the "typical" American city? It's natural beauty is unique...but as far as I can tell the infrastructure layout of Los Angeles has been emulated by nearly every major city that saw most of its development occur after World War II.

Jealousy?
LOL, I guess this "natural beauty" you speak of holds no weight since LA is continually ranked at the bottom amongst cesspools like Detroit. I am not trying to talk down on LA, just explaining the LA contempt. It's not my fault, really.
And the difference between LA and NYC is that you can live and visit NYC and never ever have to see the nasty parts. Tourists in New York are in Manhattan and will never see a bad part.
In LA, tourists have to drive everywhere and many have to drive through those third world Tijuana looking neighborhoods.

If tourists are too idiotic to use maps and the freeway system, that's their own problem.
And, you speak as if not seeing the bad parts of NYC somehow erases them. It doesn't. They're still there, and the blight is extremely apparent.

Perhaps...but what I was really referring to was how the city has been incoporated into its natural setting.
