Northrop Grumman moving HQ to Washington D.C. by 2011
Major defense contractor Northrop Grumman said it plans to move its headquarters from Los Angeles to the Washington D.C. area by 2011.
It is a shame, but a smart business decision. The US government is overwhelmingly the main customer for Northrop and it makes sense to be in Washington DC where they can essentially be next door to the Pentagon, Department of Defense, etc.... Los Angeles is much more a victim of its georgraphic separation from the federal government with this corporate move. Any other city so far from the nation's capital would have lost them too. Northrop saw that Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics were securing government contracts because they are a hop skip and jump from the Pentagon, while Northrop was a 5.5 hour flight away.
However, this move effects about 300 people. Over 30,000 employees will remain in the Los Angeles area and it will remain the flagship area for research, development, and manufacturing. 25% of Northrop's total worldwide employees are in L.A., by far the most concentrated area of Northrop employment in the world.
First of all you listed only ONE company, I repeat: ONE. ONE company leaving isn't going to do a whole lot to a city the size of LA.
Secondly: You seem to forget that LA is infamous for two things: the horrific pollution (worst in the nation) and the gang violence. Not to mention that the COL there is astronomic in comparison to most other places.
NYC is polluted and has the same COL as LA. As for gang violence, it's ridiculous to associate LA with that. That's present in all major cities.

Well LA is known for all of this more then other cities and NYC is polluted but if your put it in comparison with other cities and take conisideration of the amount of people it actually is one of the most greenest. I would put this whole jealousy thing to rest, your making this forum into more of an argument rather then a discussion. The jealousy is all on your part, to put it on everyone else makes me feel that its you that is insecure about your own city....oh and for the record Detroit is a great city once you look past all the negitives
They're moving to Northern VA, 30 miles from DC. They're supposedly considering sides in Loudoun County which is a LONG way from DC.
Virtually no companies are headquartered in DC proper--most are in VA and MD. "DC" is typically a euphanism for the entire capital region.

And 300 employees is nothing in the overall scheme of things.
Compared with the 20,000 N-G employees already here, 300 more employees is a blip. It's largely a symbolic move, since most of their business and operations are already in the DC area.

It's jealousy. There's no other possible explanation.
Have you ever been to LA, and, if so, how long did you actually stay?
