Wow, had no idea Houston was so big in the medical. Of course I don't pay much attention to medical in general.
I will say most of what nortonguy has posted makes no sense at all. Its stuff without citations, bad photos of some woman?, employment information, and a pay scale...
By city (NOT METRO) as near as I can tell from looking at lists.
Augusta, GA has 6 hospitals.
Atlanta has 9 hospitals.
Ft. Lauderdale has 7.
Gainesville has 7.
Pensacola has 8.
St. Petersburg has 8.
Tampa has 9.
Ft. Myers has 11.
Orlando has 12 (only Orlando not metro).
Jacksonville has 13 (not entirely fair since Jacksonville is essentially its own county).
Miami has 13 (remember city not county or metro).
Houston has 13 hospitals.
Now this doesn't include anything else like quality, size of each hospital, pharmaceuticals, biotech, or any of that. But I find it very hard to believe Augusta can compete with Houston or Atlanta. I think you could make an argument against certain cities in Florida. But I doubt metro Augusta can compete with Metro Orlando or Metro Miami. It might not even be able to compete with Metro Jacksonville.
It's probably most in line with Sarasota, Ft. Myers, or Gainesville.
Again this is only about hospitals but: Top American Hospitals - US News Best Hospitals
#1 in South - Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
#2 in South - Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville
#3 in South - Methodist Hospital, Houston
Those were the only hospitals in the South to make the "honor roll"
Honor Roll for Children's Hospitals had 2 in the South:
#1 Children's Medical Center (Dallas)
#2 Texas Children's Hospital (Houston)
You all can go look at specialty stuff yourself.
Best I can tell this is between:
Houston, Raleigh-Durham, Atlanta for the top 3 spots.
Gainesville FL does not have 7 hospitals. It has 4:
North Florida Regional
Shands - Alachua General (where I was born)
Shands - University of Florida
VA Medical Center
Where did you get your figure of 7 hospitals in Gainesville?
People automatically assume that because Houston has the largest medical center, that its because we cluster all our hospitals together. We have a lot more hospitals in the city.
Yeah, I don't know why people think that.
Quote:
Memorial Hermman alone operates 4 other hospitals in the city. Theres the Methodist Willowbrook in N Houston, Park Plaza Hospital in the Museum District, St. Joseph in Downtown, LBJ General, Houston NW Medical Center, Riverside General Hospital, and I'm sure I missed some others.
But Houston has at least 23 hospitals, 13 of which are in the TMC, which doesn't mean that there aren't other hospitals in the city.
I think the new Texas Children's and Methodist Hospital on the West side are at the very end of Houston's city limits. Not sure though.
Gainesville FL does not have 7 hospitals. It has 4:
North Florida Regional
Shands - Alachua General (where I was born)
Shands - University of Florida
VA Medical Center
Where did you get your figure of 7 hospitals in Gainesville?

Lol somebody said Augusta could be number 2 or 3 in GA??? Besides Atlanta what other city could you mention?
Augusta has more than 6 hospitals in the city. 1. MCG, 2. University, 3. Trinity, 4. Doctors, 5. Downtown VA, 6. Eisenhower, 7. East Central Regional Gracewood, 8. Midtown VA, 9. East Central Regional, 10. Walton Rehab.... 11. If you count Select Speciality hospital..
Four pillars of Augusta's economy gather at mayor's economic summit | The Augusta Chronicle
Augusta's hospitals have a $2.4 billion economic impact, said Lee Smith, head of the Community Foundation of the CSRA and a trustee of the Georgia Hospital Association. Adding the VA hospital, physicians and Medical College of Georgia and the impact rises to $5.8 billion, he said..
This is only the impact of the hospitals in the city and not including the metro area... A city over 200k and a metro of 540k. 1 in 5 people in Augusta has something to do with the medical community.

I didn't know were including the childrens hospital as seperate. MCG Health Children's Hospital in Augusta would make 12 hospitals in the city of Augusta.

Shands Children's has a different phone number otherwise it's the same hospital as Shands UF. Shands Vista is a psychiatric hospital and shares a campus with Shands Rehab. So no, there really aren't 7 hospitals in Gainesville.
I think the new Texas Children's and Methodist Hospital on the West side are at the very end of Houston's city limits. Not sure though.
Well I wasn't sure if that new Children's hospital was open, yet, I thought it was set to open next year, I could be wrong,so I didn't mention it. And the Methodist Hospital in West Houston, is in the city limits, but isn't set to open until november this year. But if you add those 2, theres at least 25 that I can mention, to my knowledge in Houston.
