I meant to say 2,006 murders, not 2,606.

neither, close to average

August experienced 8 more homicides than it did last year though.

Back in the early 90s there were 100+ homicides in one month when Chicago had 900+ homicides for 4 years straight.

Los Angeles is at 198 for this year as of Aug 28. Overall looking to be another record breaking low in the City of Angels as the city becomes safer. Homicides are down 10% over 2009 (219 same period in 09), which itself was a record low.

In areas of South L.A. within city limits (the most violent area of city), the police department is making progress despite the uphill fight against gangs.

The South L.A. Bureau that serves 640,000 people in notorious neighborhoods like Watts and Historic South Central has seen homicides decline to 79 year to date from 95, a decrease of 18%.

with nyc having a spike this year in murders, and l.a continuing to drop in killings does that mean that this year L.a might have a lower per capa rate then nyc?

just curious?

Wow LA has come a long way since its gang banging reputation earned during the 90s. Chicago has 100+ more murders with a million less people.

Yes, a long way. Its likely a combination of many factors, including inner city neighborhoods trying to make a better life for themselves/their kids and police breaking up gang strongholds. Little things are improving also. The graffiti covering the concrete walls of the L.A. River have been painted over and for over a year now have been relatively untouched and any blemishes are fixed quickly. This is a dramatic change from just over a year ago when it was wall to wall graffiti.

--------------------

Also, San Francisco has 34 homicides so far as of the 28th of August. This is up from 32. Total violent crime down 4% and total property crime down 11%.

Example of L.A. River clean up:

Just over a year ago the banks of the river were covered in graffiti, such as the huge and infamous "MTA Gang" graffiti that stretched the length of two Amtrak trains along the river. Its has been power washed and painted over (at a huge cost), but has gotten rid of this blight in an effort to get rid of the city's image as graffiti land.

This is the same stretch of river, where the MTA tag used to be on the left before the bridge. Not the most beautiful river, due to needing concrete walls for flood control, but it is now clean and graffiti has been off of it for over a year. It looks much better and the clean up has reduced the chest thumping of gangs. You tag = jail time
