Because a lot of it is based on reputations. NJ has a pretty good positive reputation while Ohio has a real negative reputation. Plus, NJ is Coastal while Ohio is Midwestern, and Midwestern cities and states beyond Chicago and Illinois are automatically have negative reputations.

NJ is a pretty popular whipping boy.

I know, right? It's almost like there's more to life than kvetching about taxes.

Really? That's news to me because in recent years I've been hearing more good press about New Jersey than bad; I hear their economy is doing good. Meanwhile, it seems as if Ohio has the image of Rust Belt ruin, dying population, lack of jobs and die hard Trump supporters (which I'm not).

New Jersey by a longshot. More progressive, interesting, the Shore, and many, many other points. Not remotely close.

In 2016, the counties in Cincy and Dayton went for Trump in droves while Cleveland and I think the Columbus areas went strong for Hilary.
New Jersey has the most corrupt politicians in the country.

Google "armpit of America" and see what turns up. It's not Ohio.

Ohio.

Both states tend to be underrated (Ohio) or outright demonized (New Jersey) but I prefer Ohio.

Ohio has Cleveland, is close to family in Michigan, and has a lot to do.

New Jersey. Proximity to the ocean, that's pretty much #1 for me .....
