^ well he's obviously never been to Chicago either if he actually think 2/3 of the city is a dump. Or I guess he has really high standards.
I will always defend Chicago fervently, being different and diverse doesn't make it a dump. The upper class need the lower class, and Chicago is proud to host them rather than toss them all in prison like New York. Chicago knows that the lower-middle class is full of hard-working people and that's reflected in the general attitude of the people and the kind of industries it attracts.
Chicago has some of my most fond memories, and to me, will always be special to me, along with the Motor City.
I just REALLY laugh at New York pizza though. It's designed for anorexics who spend all their money on $3000/mo rent for a 400sq. ft apartment so they can be in "the greatest city in the world" which offers the same exact thing as any other major metro, only with the smell of sewage.
I think this represents the major difference. City proper rules in Chicagoland, and City proper and suburbs are on par in Philly metro. And I think City proper being on par with Philly burbs is a pretty recent development. Before, the burbs were the more impressive force, but the city has improve so much over the past decade it is now equal to the burbs.
From the 70s through early 90s, Chicago was in the same position as Philly. It was more dangerous and had homicides that reached close to 1,000 in the early 90s. People were more afraid of the city back then. Now that Chicago has gentrified some neighborhoods, suburban people are moving to the city or visiting more often.
I don't think any metro area has it as bad as Detroit though. Talk about a suburban region being the dominant force instead of the city. A lot of people in Detroit metro rather say the suburb they're from than to mention Detroit. I have a cousin who lives in Southfield, MI and he always say "I'm from Southfield." In Chicagoland its the opposite. A lot people here say they're from or live in Chicago, although they might live in Naperville, Matteson, or Schaumburg in reality.

oh and whoever said 2/3 of chicago is a dump must be blind or something.
2/3 of PHILLY is BAD not Chicago lol the bad areas of philly are VERY, VERY bad and look more like 3rd world country rather than USA lol I know that people from philly ares will always try to make their city look better but lets face the facts, philly is one of the worst cties to live in america and i think its sad because it COULD be a very pretty town...

Let go of New York, man. We're not comparing Chicago to New York.
I would say it's a tossup since the two cities are so very similer except.......Philly is close to NYC, Washington DC, Atlantic City and Chicago is close to.....Milwaukee.
