In the defense of Chicagoland --- you are not just talking about any old lake beaches, you are talking about LAKE MICHIGAN. Don't get me wrong, I prefer the ocean waves too but do a little research and you find that Lake Michigan is alot better than you think.
As for Philadelphia, the city is built right at the "fall line" and I believe is actually part of the Piedmont, even though we do not usually use the word here in the North. The areas to the North and West of Philadelphia are actually quite hilly, and the long ridge called Blue Mountain is not that far away either.
The countryside of southeastern Pennsylvania is quite beautiful in many places, particually the rolling farmland.
I dont know really anything about Philly's metro, but I do know that Philly's burbs are in and around Philly, LOL, and Id rather live around burbs that are in and around Chicago. Not just because Ive called Chicagoland home most of my life, but because I prefer Chicago over Philly. Philly is a great city, but I just think Chicago and its vast amount of suburbs is more to my liking.
sorry i think philly metro loses as far as waterfront goes, this isn't a river or small pond, lake michigan is longer north to south than pennsylvania is east to west and half the size of your entire state. yeah it isn't the atlantic, but philly metro isn't exactly florida or california either..
just saying, don't understimate chicagos waterfront real estate just b/c it isn't on "the coasts"
Don't feel sorry for anything, first of all. And don't take it personally if someone else doesn't like your choice in metro or city.
And secondly, PA is not my state. Not yet, in any case. I call Texas my home right now. You got a problem with Texas? As they say, "Don't mess with Texas!"
I'm also just saying that don't underestimate Philadelphia metro and its location either.

philly definitely has the better location, without a doubt, I just think the amenities in the immediate chicagoland area are better than phillys is all. so that is what I'm judging on
now if we want to start including nyc, dc and getting into greater bos-wash then i'd take the *greater* area easily.
anyway lots of people sleep on both cities... they are both in top 4-5 no matter how you look at them... 2-3 often as well...

seems it would be a bit closer in the poll...not that it would beat out Chicagoland by any means. But then again, as I noted earlier, Philly area seems to be a hidden gem, and I suppose that's not all bad. I would only correct some misperceptions when I see them. Not everything said bad about Philly is wrong either, of course...some of that reputation most likely has its roots in reality.

Thats what I said.
15-20 miles N+W of Center City is a mixture of Napa Valley and New England. To the South + East is the soothing waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Thats a tough combination to beat.
Cities? Chicago hands down.
Metro? All I can say is that this is one of those polls where the majority are apparently not thinking clearly. These things tend to happen occassionally.

Maybe some people remembered that the metro includes the city in that metro and prize that above anything else in the metro. You know, just maybe.
It depends for me on where I would be living. In the city Chicago is better, but if I was regulated to the suburbs I would much rather be in Philly.
