nice try but no...Baltimore doesnt sound like this.

First off... I picked women for a reason... You brought all men. I said the women sounded similar. THey do .

Second older people in Atlanta sound different than the younger generation cause of all the inmigration and Jimmy Carter (born in the 20's) is from southwest Georgia. He does not have an Atlanta accent.

Third, yeah, it varies. Keri Hilson def. has an Atlanta accent. That's how most women I talk to sound on the northside and eastside. Here are some more Atlanta accents. You can hear the sililarity at the end that's how u know it's ATL.

Yeah, but I didn't realize how much the B-more accent differed from Philly...

DC is more culturally tied to the Northeast. I don't see how people can get that confused. I can say DC is the gateway to the south, but that's pretty much it... Atlanta is the definition of a southern major city! Even Richmond has quite a bit of northern culture and layout.

I see why people say that, but I tend to disagree. I put Richmond in the category of other historically dense but unquestionably Southern cities like Charleston, Savannah, New Orleans, Louisville, etc.

Ugh, who cares anymore? I've been down south, I've been up north, and I've been to DC. Yes, it is more similar to the "northern" atmosphere, but why should we all worry so much about a label?

I agree with the earlier poster that there are differences between the white and black accents in Philly in general

FWIW I think I mostly do not have a Philly accent with the exception of a few notable words water, daughter, Detroit but mostly not much of one for someone born and mostly lived in the area with some time in DC/NYC/SF
I have always wondered how Philadelphians distinguish their own accent from that of an NYC native.

They both sound so similar, but NYC seems to be a heavier version of the same type accent IMO. IDK, I also cannot tell the difference between someone from Atlanta vs Charlotte, Birmingham or Nashville if they are black. I can however hear a difference with natives of Virginia although some NY'ers claim they all sound overwhelmingly southern.

I also agree that white/black Philly accents vary from what I've gathered.

Honestly and maybe it is because I am from the area but I don't think NYC and Philly sound anything alike - though when i travel i have been asked if i am from NYC and i truly think i have very little accent but NYC and Philly are vastly different...

NYC and Phila are completely different accents... I'm surprised somebody would think they sound the same.

I know this may sound a bit ignorant, but all NE accents sound about the same with some variations, Philly and NYC/tri state are similar, heck to a certain extent you can even lump Baltimore and Wilmington in. The same can be said for the south, theres not much different in accent between lets say Virginia and Georgia.

The big transition zone for northern and southern accent seems to be between Bmore and DC at around Laurel or Columbia. No one from DC has a NE accent, not close. If anything its neutral or southern-lite.........
