Northern Virginia is also an extremely unpleasant place though. Yuppie paradise. Everything overpriced. Nasty attitudes. The faux-South.

I guess I'll take NOVA as at least it's IN VIRGINIA, which is a respectable state in its own right, but honestly, America would be better off if both regions dropped into the sea.
Better if both regions dropped into the sea, huh? A little dramatic? No?

Sorry it's taken me so long to get to this, but here the OFFICIAL comparison is. There's an accompanying spreadsheet that I developed. If you guys would like to see it, simply PM me with your email and I'll send both the original word document and the accompanying spreadsheet in my response.

Data for NYC Urban Area
Total # of Households (NOH): 6,515,253

Total # of people: 18,319,939 (NOP)
Per Capita Income: 34,096 (PCI)

Non-New Jersey Jurisdictions for which at least 50% of the Land Area (visibly) lies in the NYC Urban Area
1) All of New York City (NYC)
2) Nassau County, NY (NC)
3) Suffolk County, NY (SC)
4) Westchester County, NY (WC)
5) Rockland County, NY (RC)
Analysis
If the total household income is determined for the entire NYC Urban Area as well as the Non-New Jersey portions of the Urban Area, and the later number subtracted from the former, what is left will be the total household income for the New Jersey portion of the Urban Area, colloquially termed “North Jersey.” Division of the total household income for North Jersey divided by the number of households residing in North Jersey will yield the mean household income for North Jersey.
The per capita income for North Jersey is calculated similarly.

Total Household Income (THI) for NYC Urban Area
THI= MHI*NOH= 5.96634E11
Total Household Income in Non-New Jersey Jurisdictions (THI_OJ)
THI_OJ=(MHI_NYC)*(NOH_NYC)+(MHI_NC)*(NOH_NC)+(MHI_ SC)*(NOH_SC)+(MHI_WC)*(NOHI_WC)
+(MHI_RC)*(NOH_RC)=(78,483)*(3,032,961)+(122,122)* (435,160)+(104,845)*(478,920)+(130,582)*(338,682)+ (107,200)*(93,891)=3.95682E11
Total Number of Households in Non-New Jersey Jurisdictions (NOH_OJ)
NOH_OJ=(NOH_NYC)+(NOH_NC)+(NOH_WC)+(NOH_WC)+(NOH_R C)=3,032,961+435,160+478,920+338,682+93,891=4,379,614
Total Household Income in New Jersey Jurisdictions (THI_NJJ)
THI_NJJ=THI-THI_OJ=(5.96634E11)-( 3.95682E11)= 2.01E11
Total Number of Households in New Jersey Jurisdictions (NOH_NJJ)
NOH_NJJ= NOH-NOH_OJ= (6,515,253)-(4,379,614)=2,135,639
Mean Household Income for North Jersey (MHI_NJ)
MHI_NJ=(THI_NJJ)/(NOH_NJJ)= (2.01E11)/( 2,135,639)=94,100
Total Earnings for NYC Urban Area (TE)
TE=PCI*NOP= (18,319,939)*(34,096)=6.24637E+11
Total earnings for those residing in Non-New Jersey Jurisdictions (TE_OJ)
TE_OJ=(PCI_NYC)*(NOP_NYC)+(PCI_NC)*(NOP_NC)+(PCI_S C)*(NOP_SC)+(PCI_WC)*(NOP_WC)+(PCI_RC)*(NOP_RC)
=(30,415)*(8,308,163)+(41,102)*(1,352,817)+(35,140 *)(1,510,716)+(47,978)*(950,237)+(35,269)*(297,159 )=4.17454E+11
Total Earnings for those residing in New Jersey Jurisdictions (TE_NJJ)
TE_NJJ=TE-TE_OJ= (6.24637E+11)-( 4.17454E+11)=2.07E11
Total Number of People in New Jersey Jurisdictions (NOP_NJJ)
NOP_NJJ=NOP-NOP_OJ= (18,319,939)-( 12,419,092)=5,900,847
Per Caipta Income for North Jersey (PCI_NJ)
PCI_NJ=(TE_NJJ)/(NOP_NJJ)= 35,100

Total Household Income in Non-Virginia Jurisdictions (THI_OJ)
THI_OJ= (MHI_DC)*(NOH_DC)+(MHI_MC)*(NOH_MC)+(MHI_PGC)*(NOH _PGC)= (90,655)*(250,423
)+(126,018)*(341,982)+(83,996)*(298,439)=9.0866E10
Total Household Income in Virginia Jurisdictions (THI_VJ)
THI_VJ=THI-THI_OJ=(1.74134E11)-(9.0866E10)=8.3268E10
Total Number of Households in Virginia Jurisdictions (NOH_VJ)
NOH_VJ=NOH-NOH_OJ= 1,567,983-890,844=677,139
Mean Household Income in Northern Virginia (MHI_NV)
MHI_VJ=(THI_VJ)/(NOH_VJ)= 122,971
Total Earnings (TE) for DC Urban Area
TE=PCI*NOP=(43,095)*(4,178,288)=1.8006E11

Total Earnings for those residing in Virginia Jurisdictions (TE_VJ)
TE_VJ=TE-TE_OJ=(1.8006E11)-( 9.4362E10)=8.5702E10
Total Number of People in Virginia Jurisdictions (NOP_VJ)
NOP_VJ=NOP-NOP_OJ=4,178,288-2,357,044=1,821,244
Per Capita Income for Northern Virginia (PCI_NV)
PCI_NV=(TE_VJ)/(NOP_VJ)= 47,057

With regard to "old money", "generational wealth", etc. North Jersey is reputed to have more of this than Northern Virginia. However, solid numbers are VERY hard to provide with regard to which are has more families with generational wealth, etc. This is why I resorted to the method of comparison that I did.

Both places are nice, but I pick Northern NJ. Before I was married, my then-girlfriend lived in Montclair and loved it. We always told ourselves that if we ever moved back to the east coast, Montclair would be our home and that is still true today. I prefer NYC over DC. We lived in NoVA and got married there before moving to CA. NoVA is nice, but not as dynamic as NoNJ.

Alexus, I too prefer some aspects of NoNJ. I like the patterns of development around NJ Transit stations in towns such as Montclair (your town!), Ridgewood, Rutherford, Westfield, Maplewood, etc. I also like the ubiquity of awesome pizza and bagels.

However, it can't be disputed that on average, Northern Virginia is more educated, earns more money, and has less poverty than North Jersey.

Jersey. I like DC, I hate NoVA. My number 1 problem with NoVA is red lights. You seem to hit every friggin light just as it turns red and you're sitting there like a jackoff for like an hour. They also have those dividing curbs in the middle of the road, I'm having a brain fart, can't remember what they're called. But you have to make a u-turn when you want to make a left turn in too many places. So you have to sit there, wait for the left turn light to turn green while you're a half hour late yelling at the damn light to turn green, and make a u-turn while people making a right turn on red also make a turn onto where you're heading nearly causing an accident. Don't bother eating unless you know Spanish. Just starve yourself. Go to an Italian restuarant in NoVA and there are no Italians working there but hispanics. Same goes for basically every business here. No speak English. No speak English. I want to punch them in the face sometimes. They have about 500 roads with almost the same exact name and the roads are so disorganized you don't even know what direction you're going in ever. Or you're driving in a lane thinking you're all good and then all of a sudden the lane turns into a right turn only lane and you're stuck turning right. I also used to believe that pizza was just as good anywhere in the country as it was in the NY area. Here, either they burn the cheese, put too much cheese on, put too little sauce on, or put too much cheese and almost no sauce on. Pizza here sucks so much that we just decided on Papa John's all the time. Sad, isn't it?

Don't even get me started on the traffic.
