I am relocating to Cleveland from the Short North/Vic Village area of Columbus. I am excited about the new job and my new employer made it impossible not to accept their offer, but I am physically ill from the thought of leaving my neighborhood. I am looking for a walkable, urban neighborhood that offers the balance of diversity, safety, nightlife, and the upscale housing options that are similar to Victorian Village/Short North. I am hearing Tremont, Lakewood, and Ohio City are worthy considerations, but they seem really sketchy from my research. I hope to only be there for 2 years, so I want to rent. My budget could be 1500-2000 a month. Any perspective would be much appreciated. My girlfriend is moving with me, so her safety is a top priority. The occasional panhandler doesn't bother me, but I dont' want to risk getting mugged or robbed. A Grandview or Clintonville like area would be okay as well. Schools not important.

Thanks in advance for any suggetions.

I would suggest the North Eastern edge of the Lakewood/Cleveland border for you. Lakewood in general is NOT even a little sketchy.
Specifically the area around Clifton/Lake BLVD.

I know practically nothing about COL neighborhoods (except German Village) so I have no reference point there...

Short North is similar to the East 4th/Gateway section of downtown. Just don't expect it to be busy like all the time. With your budget you could pretty much rent any place down there, so good luck.

Wink Welcome!

The East 4th area would be a GREAT choice. I go there all the time, and it is consistantly busy, yet ecletic and fun for professionals or fabulous night life. Lots to do and even more places to go to in the surrounding area (Tremont, Ohio City, Little Italy, University, and so much more). The apartments over there are amazing!!! I've been inside. People I know that have moved there from places like Virginia, Columbus and NC absolutely love it and are pleased with their decisions.

Congrats on the move to CLE. Recommendations, in ranked order:

1. Downtown (E. 4 or Warehouse District)
2. Ohio City (close to W. 25 and Lorain/Bridge)
3. Lakewood (central part like Warren & Detroit)
4. Little Italy

Crime rates seem to be higher in Tremont and Ohio City, I would opt for Lakewood. It's more established with lots of small businesses and the walkability you want. Tremont and Ohio City are newer, more shaky.

Or go downtown, that could be a lot of fun, I just don't know if the retail is there and they tend to shut down parts of the city for movie filming.

If you're looking for diversity and density, Cleveland has it in spades. Diversity, density, walkability, low crime and entertainment.......hard to find anywhere!!!
