do you inspect these homes/areas alone? do you carry? and i never see the lawyers and suits walking to the 105th/quincy red-line. the sidestreets north from quincy to cedar are not good areas and everything south from quincy to 480 are crap neighborhoods. its always best to get in early and out of the bad areas before school lets out, because the teens are the first to start trouble and the dope boys start selling.

^ everyone knows I love my city, and yes I consider the entire metro an awesome part of the country. I am just giving the OP advise regarding his question from my past and current experiences. I try not to be a homer and only wear my rose-colored glasses on special occasions. he needs to do his homework. Cleveland is beautiful and ugly at the same time no matter what year you take the photograph.

I love how a simple question turns into these types of full out discussions\debates. Not just beating a dead horse, but grinding it into a pulp.
Every city has scary places. 99% of folks that are looking to move here are not going to be moving into those types of areas. There are 40+ suburbs where REAL crime is practically non existent. Just like nearly every single city in America.

To say NEO is sketchy because of a few bad areas in CLE is ridiculous and just a wee bit off the Original Topic here.

To the OP there is a cornucopia of safe places to live here.

unfortunately not true. Cleveland had an avg. of 22/100,000 murder rate for 2013. not good by any standard. and if its true that 80% of all murders take place on the eastside, then residents easily double their chances in some eastside areas. that said, most murders are blacks killing blacks over drugs/gangs/money. the typical commuter driving thru to work rarely has problems. but that's not to say it doesn't happen to innocent people... lets be honest, we do have eastside neighborhoods that are warzones.
Let's be honest, you have no idea what a warzone is like. If you did, you would realize how absurd that statement is.

I did not say that it doesn't happen to innocent people. I said that it is an exceedingly rare occurrence which, when compared to dying in an automobile, is about 400 time LESS likely to happen in the City of Cleveland -- to anyone. Compound that with the fact that an OVERWHELMING number of the murders happen due to suspect dealings concentrated in very small pockets of the city, the ratio diminishes even further.

22/100,000 people in 365 days. 400,000 people live in the city. Conservatively, 150,000 people visit the city every day for one reason or another. So, that makes 550,000 people per day who are 'exposed' to the possibility of them being murdered within the city limits. 0.24 of them die as a result of murder. And, 90% of those 0.24 murders happen in areas where most "innocent" people are not. So, in any given year and if, say, 10 of those annual deaths are of the innocent variety, the number becomes 0.027 per day. That makes the odds of an "innocent" person dying due to an indiscriminant crime about 1 in 20.4 million (about 41,000 times less likely than dying in an automobile). So, please, stop making it out as if innocent people are continuously being indiscriminantly picked off. Yes, it happens. However, that incident is very, very rare.

read what I read if your last few sentences were directed at me. I have never mentioned innocent people. geeeez... ps- your long drawn out math analogy based on your conservative guestaments can be applied to any US city. bottom line is clevelands violent crime rate is much to high. and the east side is by far the worst.

It is too high, but it affects few. It seems that some like to use specific statistical metrics without quantifying what they actually mean. And what it means is that, though it may be comparably high in ratio when compared to other cities, it doesn't mean a whole lot for the average person. Though I didn't mention it before, many of the comparable cities are physically the size of our county (e.g., Indianapolis, Chicago). Take the numbers for Cuyahoga County (10/100K) and then do a comparison. The situation improves dramatically. It's tiring to read/listen/watch people apply statistics solely in the way that somewhat bolsters their negative argument. The bottom line is that, like every other damn city in the country, Cleveland has higher crime areas that one should avoid. Exactly which part of that is breaking news?

I suggest you also take a ride on the Goodtime III Cruise Ship that docks at E9th St Pier. It's affordable and allows for beautiful views of both Lake Erie, the Cuyahoga River, and the sunset. Check their schedule as some nights they offer live music.

While you are in the University Circle area, check out the entertainer schedule for the Barking Spider. Some incredibly talented folks come thru there.

Check out too the free groups and events posted to meetup.com to see where you might meet up with some locals or get some ideas of where to go. There is a 'Cleveland New in Town (or NOT!!) Meetup Group' that may have something scheduled while you are in town.
