According to the newspaper article in another thread, it sounds like the Publix on OKI will be smaller than their normal store size and have a larger deli/prepared foods section with indoor/outdoor seating. There will also be a coffee shop in the store. It sounds like it will not have a large grocery section like a traditional store.

In the presentation they mentioned this will be a concept of a destination store. They will have indoor and outdoor eating areas with a more upscale setting.

They also plan to subsidize a restaurant to locate to the shopping center.

They own all the property from 49th to 52nd including the lots for the not going to happen (Ocean Ridge?) beach club between Pelican and E Beach.

The projected size of the new Publix is 30,000 square feet. The smallest Publix prototype store is 28,000 square feet.

I think Oak Island will see a Publix similar to store 1148, McBee Station, 400 East McBee Avenue Suite 100, Greenville, South Carolina 29601-2940. This store is over 28,000 square feet, has pharmacy, bakery, delicatessen, produce, seafood, meat, and floral service departments, and carries less inventory than larger stores at 45,600 or 49,098 square feet would carry. The new store would be larger to include indoor seating and a coffee shop.

Groundbreaking will be in the spring, acc to the owner of an adjacent business, who was told this by the site developer.

Despite announcing three additional stores in North Carolina this week, Publix has not announced its Oak Island Marketplace store yet. I hope the announcement is official soon.

Barring unforeseen delays, how long should it take after groundbreaking before a new store opens?

Any new store Publix is officially announcing now is projected to open in 2018. Six out of 41 announced stores in North Carolina are projected to open in 2018. At the earliest, I could see stores opening in the first quarter of 2018.

Would it be proper to assume that -- for the as-yet-unannounced Oak Island store -- opening could not be sooner than 12 months after groundbreaking? Or perhaps 18 months?
