NCMan,
Water quality determines our living quality. So I appreciate the document that you posted. I won't get into splitting hairs about the group or some of their claims-Or even some of your other statements like barrier islands being formed by hurricanes (That's incorrect)
But please be careful when using the "P" word.

Since Hurricane Floyd struck in 1999, Pfiesteria has not been reported as a cause of fish kills in North Carolina

Im just posting the facts not trying to argue with you, we share the same love of fishing and know alot of the same people. But I said there was a history of physteria did not say it happened recently and no one can truthfully say the neuse does not have issues with waste from hogs and sewage because it does. This increases the risks of another outbreak. would also like to see the gillnets controlled but no one will step up.

This is true, large storms and sand island formation. it is one of three theories and most backed for NC barrier island.Beach Nourishment - Coastal Geology (http://www.csc.noaa.gov/beachnourishment/html/geo/barrier.htm - broken link)
Other theories include glaciers after the ice age formed them. all protect coastline frombrunt of hurricanes

NC man-As you know, there is so much that we as coastal residents can do to protect our waterways. Impervious surfaces and upcoming changes to what is and is not allowed is a "hot issue" for the coast at the moment.
I did an interview with Tom Reeder, Stormwater & Wetlands Manager for the NC Division of Water Quality a few weeks back. The topic was stormwater run off and impervious services. I did it for our television program but supply the audio portion here for all to listen to. Very interesting "stuff"

Now in terms of gill nets, you and I apparantly disagree. Gill nets are a very target specific gear. It's usage, as well as commercial fishing in general along some NC areas is in sharp decline.

Here is a brief video I produced that demonstrate's how target/fish specific a gill net is. It was taped on location in Core Sound about 7-8 years ago immediately following a gale. To watch Click Here (broken link)
