I have a master's degree, but I really am convinced that a college degree is not really necessary in most lines of work...even though there is a ubiquitous requirement. Face it, for most office jobs, how much of what you learned in school really come into use? Yes, some fields like medical professions use what is learned in school, but they are the exceptions. Most fields, you can probably learn what you need to know on the job. Far too many people are in college...I would say that half of people in college right now should not be there. I am a firm beliver that apprentice systems should come back into vogue. However, given the societal pressures for having a degree, I doubt there will be a seismic change anytime soon.

Of all my children, the one who did not finish his degree has the best standard of living. He built his own home, remodeled his others making profit on them, excelled in his job and rose the ladder of management, and in general has shined. Not that my other children have not done well with their degrees, but that this man is raising a family and doing it amazingly well with his wife staying at home even though she has a degree and a Chiropractor's license (yes she has 8 years of school). I got my degree only because my company told me it would open career doors that I never imagined, and it did. Each person and circumstance determines the need for a degree.

some jobs its not worth getting a degree when they start you off at $8-9dollars an hour when others have got the job cause of who they know and can work their way up into the company without any degree or experience.
