These military are often not "choosing" to live off base. Almost no bases, even overseas, have enough on base housing to house everyone.

Yes it was and it was insignificant then. If all the military left the Springs would be in trouble.

Are we talking military or defense? Military is only 10% of the population. On the other hand, defense spending, to include the military, civil service, and contractors, is somewhere north of 30% of the local economy. Including multiplier effects, it could be more than that, and while the military leaving would certainly hurt and likely create a decade long recession, it would not wipe out the city.

It would damper out the city if the military left. We need the US Navy, Cheyenne Mountain, Fort Carson, ect to keep this place thriving. This is where we get business. Of course not everybody is from the military sector but it's a big chunk for the economy. We may not be off the map but we would have less business and economy. People come here, stay here, retire from the military, and start businesses. It's a good place.

If you go on Ft. Carson, you see the trend pretty quick: a persons vehicle is their identifier, much more so than for people outside the military. It's what sets them apart in a world where everyone wears the same clothes, has the same haircut, lives in a similar house... And they have a lot of disposable income compared to a lot of other people in their same demographic There's people all over spectrum, from the motorcycler that wears antlers on his head to the 4 runner absolutely covered in mud to the proud to be dented Subaru to the glowing Miata... And a lot of them happen to be really big loud trucks.

The army seems much more this way than the air force.

I think a lot of people are truly blind to the negative effects of Fort Carson. It's not all heroes, people. Much fewer problems with the Air Force bases.

Actually, I find most of the military that live in my area, very nice and polite. I have neighbors who are rude and inconsiderate and do not give a rip about HOA rules or anyone else for that matter. However, most are caring and nice people. My point being is that their are A holes where ever you are and that will never change and it does not matter if they are in the military or not or the color of their skin or what their religious beliefs are. You find these kind of people where ever you go or where ever you live. Actually, I have noticed that most are younger---the entitled generation with attitude but again, not all. Just my observation.
