Am just wondering, how new residences (past/present), especially those that moved from a non-snow area to Colorado, how they handle living in Colorado's winters? I'm basically talking about those that are not yet retired or a Senior yet.

I moved from FL almost 9 years ago with a FWD car. I had no idea of snow tires until I managed a Big O Tires store in the mountains. I currently only drive AWD cars with dedicated snow tires. I rarely go up to the mountains but snow tires make ALL the difference and it was extremely evident yesterday

What about how people, new to Colorado, drive in winter?

We move here and don’t change until it goes in the crapper.

Is it, or has it, gone there yet (crapper)? I know the lifestyle speed sure has increased and people are driving a whole lot faster now than years before.

When I got here I brought FWD cars and thought I will only need AWD maybe 5-10 days a year so I could manage without it. All it took was one bad experience where I had to get to the airport and barely made it to change my mind and get a Jeep for the bad days. I find all-season tires are good enough for the city climate but it is annoying how bad residential roads are when we get Dec/Jan storms. Thankfully have not ended up in the crapper yet in over 10 winters.

It had been years ago, but wife and I both grew up in winter/snow areas. Her, in southeastern Michigan and myself, in northeastern Indiana. She had a Toyota 4-Runner for the first three winters we lived in Colorado and then, in December 2005, bought our Dodge Durango SLT w/AWD and 4-Lock switch, as well as All-Terrain Wrangler tires on it at John Elway Dodge in Centennial. We also had, but sold, a 1997 Dodge RAM 1500 that had High/Low 4-Wheel Drive stick-shift on it. Still have the Dodge Durango at 177,000 miles on it.

So, IOW, we really never had any problems driving in snow and we drove slow/decently in snow.

They handling by either driving 5 mph until all the snow is gone or, they don't slow down until they are in a ditch and calling a tow truck or spinning like a top taking out several other cars or damaging property.

Learn and adapt, die, or move away.

Same as with any other difficulties.
