City populations are flawed. You know this. I guess you better consider Charleston. I wonder if people have left Atlanta because Charlotte has a larger population? Lol. Better yet, Augusta! It has as population of around 200k. Don't get mad, i'm joking.

It's a personal native South Carolinian thing. Strange, I know, but I never said I wasn't strange in some respects.

But Columbiadata- we NEED you! If you leave then that will make Columbia all the more susceptible to other cities overtaking Columbia, possibly North Charleston and even worse- Greenville. But hey, strange people make interesting people- better that way.

Charleston won't overtake Columbia. Columbia is clearly the larger city and MSA and we aren't surrounded by other incorporated cities so we just have to encourage unincorporated areas to join the city. I'd personally like to see a full city/county consolidation and then Columbia would have close to 400,000 people.

With the fire and police departments cooperating now, we're perhaps a step closer to city-county consolidation, but I won't hold my breath. It's interesting to me that Sheriff Leon Lott said the city and county are now one team in fighting crime, but didn't mention or forge any official bonds with any of the county's paper towns or cities or whatever they call themselves. I believe the city is about to start annexing chunks in a way we've thought was impossible in this state.

I've thought about this too, but it won't happen with these laws. People here in Greenville's surburban towns would fight this hand, tooth, and nail.

I agree. I really like the fact Columbia has been its own, independent city with no other cities or towns around it to influence its size; an example being Like Raleigh-Durham, Greenville-Spartanburg. I agree with an earlier post concerning Charleston running out of room, you can just look at a map and see how closed in Charleston is on all three sides. Always thought its interesting how North Charleston hasn't been incorporated into the city of Charleston, if it was that'd easily make it the biggest city in the state.

Other than Augusta, what are some other cities that incorporate the city/county consolidation? Would this ever happen for Columbia? Is the city of Columbia taking steps to incorporate these unincorporated areas to the city? It'd be much more aesthetically pleasing to see Columbia have a pseudo circle shape to its city limits like Charlotte- all nice and even

Or heck, what about revising the SC annexation laws?!

The most realistic revision in state annexation laws that could occur is giving cities the authority to automatically annex "donut holes," unincorporated areas completely surrounded by the city. It seems to be proposed almost every year in the Legislature but goes nowhere. Things might change since the most powerful person in the Legislature, Glenn McConnell, has since vacated his position. One person seeking that position is a Charleston official who wants to see changes in the annexation laws.
