Ha very good theory. Some of the detractors, while overblown, did have an argument about Main Street feeling cavernous though. The stretch immediately north of the State House, excepting Bourbon and Cantina (and maybe eventually the Arcade), feels rather dead outside of business hours.
I'm hoping that as space between Hampton and Laurel becomes scarce, some of the building owners between Gervais and Hampton will retrofit their lobbies to accommodate stores or restaurants. They did this in Charlotte by adding a Carolina Ale House to the base of the Grant Thornton building. I sincerely doubt any of the buildings on Main could accommodate such a large retrofit, but certainly smaller spaces would be feasible given adequate demand.
The lobby of 1441 Main was retrofitted rather successfully IMO.
I havent been in the lobby of the capital ctr in some time but from the outside it seems like a perfect location for an urban Target Store similar to what is in many major cities.
To be fair i think one running down Main would be nice. But i think an actual trolley running down Main would be better. But that's for the future future.
A new, non-branded, boutique hotel will be built in the Powell building on Sumter Street. It will have 41 rooms and will occupy the majority of the renovated building.
Not sure about the boutique hotel, but when I asked a month or so Go they told me the bowing alley should be open in September/October.
Not too much of a delay according to the original timetable...thanks for the info!
