If Columbia pulls off even half the irons in the fire, we have a lot to look forward to.
Yes. The trick is getting as much done as possible before the downturn.

I think we have a while before another downtown. Let's hope so, at the very least.

Downturns are cyclical and inevitable, but I agree it will be a while before the next one.

This is the step that I've been waiting for. We might actually start going vertical, very exciting.

I'm quite ready for a new tallest, though. Two would be even better.

Whats the chance of a new tallest being one atop one of the parking garages? It'd be easy to get an overall tall structure, but how tall? I mean, are there 40 story buildings that sit on top of a parking garage? Or is this just something they'll put a midrise, ten story building that would give the skyline another ~200 foot tall building?

I'd say the chances are nil. The engineering is possible, but cost prohibitive in a city like Columbia.

I'd expect mid-rise apartment buildings on top of the existing parking garages. There are skyscrapers built from the ground up with parking garages in the lower levels, but it would be costly to retrofit the garages to be able to support a high-rise. The foundations likely would be inadequate, too. Of course, I'm a banker and not an engineer, but common sense says no.

Default Surprised nobody discussing the parking sticking point

So y'all Think city council caves, gives the apartment developer all the spots they need and then just builds more garages? Because in the state story as of now apartment residents may not be able to park in building they live in.
