Really stunning, reminds me a lot of Canalside, Sola Station, Brookland and the Tremont in Columbia, SC. It really is a pretty development. And the good news is that these types of projects really do help. When Canalside was first announced, everyone called Mayor Coble a lunatic. But it ultimately led to the redevelopment of Huger Strest and eventually the entire Congaree Vista. Can’t wait to see what else comes for Columbus.

Good thing is this is phase 1 of 4. Need more height on the future buildings.

I'm guessing the office building construction will start late summer/early fall next year.

I never realized architecturally how similar Columbus and Columbia are really until this thread. The white building looks like a shorter Capitol Center BB&T building. And how Sola Station and CanalSide look like this development.

Columbus doesn't do "heights." Nice thought though...

Sadly for Columbus, I'm old enough to remember when the Columbus and Columbia's skylines were about the same...in the late 60's, early 70's. Columbia went "up," while Columbus went "out."

It will happen eventually. The more downtown grows developers will be forced to go up. When land is scarce or prices are too high, you build up. Hopefully a younger generation will push out the old way of thinking. It’s happening.

I hope you're right. Folks have been saying that for years. We'll see...

Maybe up to 8 stories, but downtown Columbus probably won't ever see anything taller than that. And I think that's a good thing.

I think I read somewhere that the going rate per square foot for a city needs to average $33 per sq/ft. And that’s for a 28 story building I believe. But I’m not sure if that was just for Columbia or every market. Either way, I think the price of surrounding areas affects it. It’s at what point does it become cheaper to just build a new tower than buy existing space and renovate it? That’s the key. One that a lot of places have to find.
