That's a little outside my realm. Putting in my own RAM brought pride.
And I followed a youtube vid to do it. I bet I could find a youtube vid to remove the hard drive.

You know, I had thought exactly the same thing about the webcam - that is, that an external one is easier to move around, and that I'd rather have an external one than an internal one malfuction, because the former is much easier to replace!
Yep. And I take my mom all over my yard to show her every thing. I wish I could do the same with an ipod type device, because lugging the laptop around can be a pain.

Still deciding...
good luck! It's so fun getting a new computer. They're all fast lol.

I wish I felt that way! I'm stressed about choosing the wrong one.

Also, re: removing the hard drive. The guy at Best Buy's Geek Squad did it - but after having seen what was involved, and how simple it was, I could have done it myself. They didn't even have to open the machine up - it was similar to taking out the battery.

Well, since you've opened the Acer already ... you might as well keep it at this stage, right?

Up until this afternoon, I was 80% sure I was going to take the Toshiba, largely because of the fact that they have higher ratings for reliability - although, as noted, some questioned how current the data was on the chart I linked to. And as Braunwyn said, getting an external webcam - which I rarely use anyway - might be a plus.

However...now that I have the Acer open, and I'm looking at the 17.3" screen, which I've put side by side with my HP's 15.6" screen (the same size as the Toshiba), I am being tempted by the screen size. It looks much more comfortable not only for viewing videos, hulu, etc., but also for some of the work I'll be doing as well (where it's nice to have space to spread things out).

So in the end, it's down to a matter of size vs. "quality."

Clearly, I'm a nut.

OK! Go with the Acer since it has the larger screen, which you said will be more appropriate for your needs in a laptop.

They both have warrantees, right? Does either one offer an extended warrantee? Because you're quite likely going to need it, probably no matter which one you choose.

There! Decision made.

Don't bother with an extended warranty bought at the store ...

SquareTrade | Laptop Insurance Alternative | Laptop Warranty | Laptop extended warranty | Laptop Warranties

$70 for 3 years; $120 with accidental coverage.

Wow, that's incredibly helpful, Narfcake!

I know that you'll all be dying to know (ahem) that I decided to keep the Acer, and returned the Toshiba tonight. In the end, it really came down to big screen vs. reputation, because the other specs were virtually the same - and I may regret this, but the big screen really sold me.

And with the $70, three-year warranty that Narfcake suggests, perhaps I can breathe a bit easier - $23.33/year is definitely worth the peace of mind.

Thanks everyone for all the input.
