Back on topic. If you managed to get the old computer fixed, starting to use it again is going to bring up more problems that will cost money and be difficult to fix. It will almost surely need a memory upgrade, and the type of memory it needs will be more rare than for a newer machine, for example. If you can afford to replace it, that would be a good thing.
I haven't worked on an eMachine for about 10 years, so I can't comment on the WalMart offering.
I assume the $300 computer is a "Netbook"? Not bad but small screen and no CD/DVD drive inside.
Any time someone asks me if I will look at a computer for them my first question is "how old is it?". If they reply anything older then 4 years, my reply is: "Time to buy a new one". I won't even look at one that old.
Basic fully functional laptops can be had for $500-$600.
Well worth it.
