Trimming , cutting, glueing music files to create new music (flash, Open Office, installing)

Hi, I need to work with some music recordings ( which I recorded with the Olympus recorder) . I have downloaded these files to my windows 8 using the accompanying software, digital wave player. I am now looking to editing these files - picking different portions of a recording and putting them all together into a new music file. Is there any software that would do the work ? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder

EDIT: Be careful of installers from SourceForge, they've decided to shill crapware via installer wrappers (similar to CNet and others). I don't think this project is doing that however I would recommend not just blindly 'nexting' through the installer.

What does this mean? Is it safe to try the audacity software or not?

What he is saying is when installing the software don't go clicking through the install process quickly, look for "do you want to install <insert some lame piece of software> too". That lame software is usually something like a toolbar or anti virus application. A lot of legitimate software offered for free is doing this, Open Office and the web selection for the installer for Flash comes to mind.
