my first pc was an HP whith an AMD cpu in it and it kicked ass. but that was back in the 90's. today an intel 3770 can blow away an 8 core AMD

An i7 3770? I should hope so. Whats more telling is that a Haswell i3 dual core usually can save for a few multi-threaded apps.

As far as the two GPU families I tend to prefer Nvidia, although the PC I'm typing this on has an HD 7850 2GB and I'm pretty happy with it. AMD GPUs tend to offer a lot of performance for the money.
