My master external drive failed, and it had my ipod master music on it. But the songs I bothered to listen to were in my iPod. Does anyone know how I can pull off my music from my iPod so I can put a new set of music in it / new playlist in iTunes?
You seem to have a problem with loosing data that you want or need. Has the concept of backups still eluded you? Less than a month ago you also lost data.

Maybe Vista is eating up data and storage devices.
Why not just get a generic MP3 player like from Creative or something. Cheaper, plays WMA and MP3, portable to any PC, no synchronization limitations, don't need garbage Itunes, etc.
I honestly don't know why anybody buys an Ipod unless they just plain get suckered into the hype and marketing, like this:

Actually, Mr. Genius, it's not an 'iPod hassle thread.' There's nothing wrong with the guy's ipod. His hard drive failed, and he needs to know how to import the music from his ipod to the new hard drive. And it's easy to do, using any number of programs.
