Are you looking to buy in Middletown itself or somewhere in the area? Middletown is a nice town with a lot to offer but it is a small city and as such does have some urban issues. We would need more information to help you more. Jay

I grew up in Middletown and its a nice small diverse city to live in. I hope you like to eat because Main Street is littered with restaurants!

Middletown has as nice downtown to visit for restaurants, shops, etc. Wesleyan provides some really great local cultural opportunities. However, due to some of the urban (or "small city") problems that Middletown has been facing, I would choose to live in one of the more rural surrounding towns. Public schools are also better in nearby towns. Try Durham if you need public schools. Other nearby rural or suburban towns that are great places to make a home are Middlefield, Cromwell and Higganum.

We are looking to buy a house in the area, within 10-15mins of Middletown.
We just want to buy it in a nice - safe area with reasonable taxes and cost.

Our budget max. is 300k!

A place with good resale value will be great as we plan to move from this area in 5-6 years so we might need to sell it.

nico7 - Do you know if Cromwell, Middlefield have good schools??

Thanks everyone!!

I would venture to say that Middletown is begining to rival West Hartford with the number and quality of restaurants it has along Main Street.

I agree Cromwell and Middlefield would be good choices for better schools. also consider Rocky Hill and Berlin. For information on schools, see the links below. Jay

Thanks all!

We have been renting in Middletown for a year now and i agree it has great restaurants.
As I said before, we just want to buy in some area which is safe and popular when it comes to reselling.

Somehow, people that I talked to at work didn't speak very highly of Middletown and Cromwell, in relation to schools and property value but it seems from your opinions that they might worth looking!

b/w I found this link Rating the Small Towns 2010 - Connecticut Magazine - March 2010 - Connecticut

I don't know how correct this is but it doesn't list Rocky Hill or Middletown or Cromwell??

That is because Rocky Hill, Cromwell and Middletown all have larger populations than the article uses to define a "Small Town".

Middletown is really a small city and its schools have some of the issues found in urban schools. They generally perform under the state averages on the Connecticut Mastery and Connnecticut Academic Performance Tests. Many people living in Middletown will send their children to private schools for upper grades. Both Rocky Hill and Cromwell perform well above the state averages. Jay
