Hi forum,

I'll be going to Uconn in 2011 for an international exchange program, and I'd like to travel to some of the farms during the semester break for day trips. This will be in mid March. Is this recommended? I live in a completely urban Asian city, and have never been to a farm before! Which are some of the more popular ones I can visit?

How might I travel without a car? I have a drivers license back home (automatic), but as I will only be there for 1 semester, I don't think I should get a car. In any case I'm not confident driving on the 'wrong' side of the road!

Should I skip CT and go straight to NYC/Chicago?

Thanks!

I can't comment on any of the farms in that area however I would like to know how and when you were accepted already for the Spring semester? I believe the application deadline is Oct.15, 2010.

I'm not sure what kind of farms you want to look at, but New England has a ton of farms (more than NYC, that's for sure).

The international exchange program is different. The due date is November 1st, and they have rolling admissions. Not that this has anything to do with the OP's question....

Early action decisions are sent out early February. UCONN doesn't have rolling admissions for undergrads and as far as I was aware, not for international.

My curiosity was directed to the OP. Maybe he can clarify?

To clarify for your curiosity, the School of Business, School of Medicine and Int'l Studies Program all have rolling admissions.

The International Exchange program is an undergraduate program. The School of Business does NOT have rolling admissions at the undergrad level. It does for the graduate/MBA program. The School of Med is also for graduates. There is not rolling admissions for undergrads at UConn.

Where do you see the Exchange program is rolling admissions? A link or the OP chiming in could answer my question!

Hi golly,

Please see this link for locations of farms located in Tolland county (where UConn Storrs is located): Tolland County

I did not go to UConn so I am not sure about this, but it appears that there is a farm on UConn property; you could probably just walk over to the agriculture center from your dorm/classroom. Call the UConn College of Agriculture at (860) 486-2917 to find out if you can go on a tour.

If you are more interested in commercial farms, again, please refer to the link above. As an international student, your driver's license from home will be valid for the entire time that you're in the US on student visa. You could probably rent a car with your existing license and drive out to a farm on the outskirts of Storrs. However, since you said you may be uncomfortable driving here, try making an acquaintance from the College of Agriculture that already has a car and would like to accompany you to a farm outside of Storrs. There is no reason to go to NYC or Chicago looking for farms when CT is loaded with them.

Yes there is a farm that is run by the agriculture department. I have no interest in stuff like that so I've never been, but there are people who walk around up there on weekends. I don't know if they're organized groups, though. The area is known as Horsebarn Hill.
