Yep, my brother in law is a lic contractor and he and I do the work on my place. We just replaced our old sliders with some new Andersen ones. What a job!!! We used foam insulation all around the gaps. No leaks whatsoever. What a difference that made in that area......but ALL the other windows need to be replaced. Doing that after taxes.
Thanks for the replies everyone.

I had all of our thermostats changed to programmable ones - not too expensive and it's nice to have everything programmed to turn down and night and during the day. Might be an idea for you?

From what I read somewhere, it saves more oil by setting a constant temperature than making it change throughout the day.

My furnace guy says he sets it at 66 throughout the day even though he has zoned thermostat because it is most efficient that way.

it is more efficient to keep your house more "constant" but i dont think anyone is suggesting turning your heat off/so low that your house has to do alot of catching up...instead just a little cooler for nighttime/when your not there (ie if your most comofrtable at 66, set it for 64 on the overnight/when your not there and 66 when your home...

but yes my friends in hvac have said the same, keeping thermostats more constant saves a little more in the long run because your system never has to play catch up...it takes more to bring a house back up to temeparture than it does to keep it there...

lol...I read that somewhere too and I laughed, then I realized it was through CL&P...so I laughed some more..

Homes do retain heat so in a sense if a thermostat is kept at 70, it wont have to turn on as much...but think about it... 6-8 hours of it not turning on as opposed to trying to keep the home at 70...

Best thing to do is try it for yourself. Set it at 68 only for 1 month(when billing cycle starts and ends) then do one month of turning it down to 55 and 68 when you get home and 65 when you sleep... But make sure the outside temp isn't 10 one month and 50 the other month.

Default This helped us a little

My wife and i had a "KVAR" device installed in our home. We save about 10 percent on our bill now every month. Saving 30 dollars a month isnt really that much money but I figureit all adds up.

Oh my I am shocked-I am thinking about relocating to Conneticut and here is Florida the electric runs around 250.00 for about a 1500 SQ Ft home using AC in our very hot summers and heat in winter (few as they are) I am totally blown away that is a major expense!! What about wood burning stoves?
