How is it that NC gets away with a residency requirement for parking passes at its train stations? Since the lots are state owned, I thought the state mandated that parking passes at metro north stations needs to be open to everyone.

not all of the parking lots at stations are state owned. Many if not most are owned and operated by the towns. NC may be one of them. Jay
If living on the west side of Wilton, New Canaan seems to be a good option. $5 a day is not too bad, but how early do you have to be there to get a spot? Also, do you need a non-resident permit for daily parking in New Canaan?

Yankeemom can ask her H for you about the time you should get there. I will guess anytime before 7am will net you at least one empty space.
You don't need a non-resident permit for daily parking in New Canaan because they have already designated spaces for non-residents. I think there is a machine where you pay quarters. They are actually really good space as they are right beside the train platform.
H is not home today, but I will ask him. As I said, I know he said it had gotten tighter, but he is an early riser anyway. I have also done the "kiss and go" on occassion without difficulty. The machines take credit cards, you need to know your parking space before you go to the machine. And save the little slip, H has gotten two tickets (one in NC, one in Norwalk), but with the slip and credit card statement, they were dismissed.
I used to take the train to NYC years ago, but now I just drive every single time. It's much quicker and cheaper if you plan to stay in the city for 5-10 hours or so.

The 8:03 from NC would most probably not have any spots left. That is considered leaving pretty late, by most commuter standards into NYC.
