My wife is interested in a job on State St in New Haven. We live in Derby on the Orange border. I read that New Haven can be bad. As she does not drive just yet.,I would be concerned for her safety. Is this a rough, crime area? Or is it safe? The address is 669.

If she is just doing regular 9-5 hours, I wouldn't worry about that area. If she's out walking past 8 or 9, then I'd be more wary. It's not typically a high crime area but it is less traveled than other parts of downtown. She's taking a bus? How's she getting there?

I agree. It isn't as busy as Chapel Street but it isn't in no-man's land either. Check CT Transit for bus schedules.

just to let the OP know, parts of State St are within walking distance of the train station on Union Ave. not sure it would be worth taking the train from such a close departure point but it is an option..

State Street is nothing like that... I just wouldn't walk around late at night alone. That goes for any less-traveled road in any significant city.

I don't agree with MKiv808.

The part of State Street near Fair Haven is indeed sketchy, and I wouldn't walk around it and feel comfortable at all, at three in the afternoon.

But lower State, by the train station, is fine, and it's fine all the way up past Trumbull Street (I'm geographically challenged, I'm forgetting what is past that). The police department is near the train station and there are tons of commuters, besides the restaurants, shops, etc. up and down that end. It's very city/Yalie.

It's not sketchy. It's right off of Auduban Street, which has a lot of arts activity. A block away are a bunch of restaurants and bars, including the famous Modern Apizza. A few blocks east, yes - it can be sketchy. But the part of State Street in question is fine. The address he provided is where Carmen Anthony Steakhouse is. Yeah, real sketchy.

If you don't feel comfortable outside Carmen Anthony's at 3 in the afternoon, you have issues.

There are 2 train stations. One is right on State Street not far from the area in questions, and then there is Union Station - which I would call a worse area than the one around the Street Street station.
