It was a political move to have it done in the U.S. He's part of the conservative party in Canada.

Of course Keon would say that...he's protecting his @ss and their system.

"Pulled directly from the article".
Williams had consulted "a number of medical experts" over several weeks, said Dunderdale.

"It was never offered to him as an option to have this procedure done in the province," she told reporters in St. John's.

The vast majority of Canadians (Newfoundland included) are receiving their bypass surgery within the recommended wait time of 26 weeks, said Tonya Johnson, CIHI media relations coordinator.

You have to remember that there is a big conservative push in Canada and they want to get rid of the canada health act the same way the tea party libertarians down here want to get rid of medicare(which is of course socialized medicine for senior citizens).....It comes down to greed. Let grandpa die I guess if he doesn't have money. It's a disgrace.

Newfoundland is a remote province in the middle of nowhere. Yes, Canada's healthcare system is not perfect due to LOW FUNDING....WE PAY MORE IN MEDICARE TAX THAN THEY PAY FOR THEIR ENTIRE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM!! The best healthcare in the world is in France. WHO has Canada listed at 30.(from 2000) and the U.S. at 37 below costa rica......YOU HAVE 50 MILLION AMERICANS WITHOUT HEALTH INSURANCE! That's what makes is SO BAD! How long are there wait lists for the uninsured? Oh right, they wait till they have a heart attack and then stick them in the ICU for weeks costing more in the end anyway to the tax payer. The U.s/ also has the most expensive delivery system.(private insurance)

While many bemoan said system, they also fail to understand the laws of unintended consequences. We have a U6 un/underemployment rate of about 16.5 percent. Many millions work in industries linked directly to the Health Insurance industry. If we did eliminate the admin cost out of it, we'd have a U6 most likely well in excess of 20 percent.

The whole idea of "insurance" when it comes down to an absolute public safety necessity like health care is a joke. It should be provided by the government just like police. The police don't turn away because you didn't pay your police insurance when you're being murdered in your home. Every single other modern 1st world nation has universal government run healthcare that covers every citizen.

80 000 people come to the USA for health care, plastic surgery, liposuction etc each year. Between 1 000 000 and 1 500 000 people leave for health care each year. It is one of the most comprehensive rejections of a system in history by citizens voting with their feet.

Although Canada does have waits. In fact they are the only First World country to have longer waits than America.

Yes, it is. And the average wage, not adjusted for cost of living (PPP), is 80 000 $. If you adjust for the cost, it is still almost 10 000 $ ahead of the US. If prices are higher, and wages are higher yet that is a net gain.

Of course, that is before you start counting things like 5-6 week vacations, 1 year maternity leave, health care, pensions, etc, etc.

Yes, but the number of Americans emmigration to Norway exceed the number of Norwegians emmigrating to America by almost 50 %. Despite it being easier for Norwegians to emmigrate.

I have a friend in Canada that loves the healthcare for her family, she said the only time they have waits is for their autistic son to see a new specialist or get specialized testing. Her husband had to be rushed to the emergency room with a heart problem and he was immediately treated then and over the next few weeks by a specialist. I think they have a one year maternity leave in Canada as well. Long wait times are not uncommon in this country too though, our family members have often waited two months or more for some appointments, including heart specialists. I think posters can share links back and forth all day, but the fact is there are some advantages and disadvantages to the healthcare system in both countries. Neither is perfect, but I do wish ours was more like theirs, just better.

Well waiting lists obviously suck and 26 weeks to wait for a bypass surgery is unacceptable, but that's what happens when you have limited funds(still a TON of rich people in Canada), and you have to cover everyone. But at least there aren't 50 million people with no insurance. What I said before about no waiting lists in canada was there was no waiting lists to see a regular doctor or the ER the way the media potrays it. Specialists a different story.

But again, there are no wait lists in France to see a specialist. Here's a good link discussing different systems

France without question has the best universal coverage of any nation. No wait lists and you have options to buy private coverage if you want to. And you get to pick your own doctor. And it still costs less than the U.S.!
