Had the chance to drive through Milford, Branford, and Guilford today. Seems given what we are looking for, Milford offers the most. Great town center, clean, and lots of nice looking developments, albeit a little farther from the downtown area. I might have missed it but does Branford have much of a town center compared to Milford? Guilford is really nice, and seems a little more quaint than the other 2.
You mentioned nice developments in Milford, but not near downtown. Are you looking for a newer development specifically?
These streets are developments literally blocks from downtown with newer homes:
Hitching Post Lane
Founders Way
Very nice streets, if you can find a home for sale on one of them. The homes are larger and the streets have an upscale feel. Don't know what your timetable is, unfortunately there are no homes for sale there right now.
Also, Gulf Street and many of its side streets have some nice, newer homes and well-restored older homes. It's one of the more desirable areas in town and very close to downtown.
Big Help, thanks. No, it doesn't need to be a new development, just prefer developments in general...neighbors in walking distance, close community, etc.

It sounds like the Lexington Green development would probably appeal to you. It's located between Wheelers Farm and Oronoque Roads. Typical home is a colonial 10-15yrs. old, 1700-2600 square ft., .25-.33 acre lot. Definitely not within walking distance to downtown though.

Well, those are prevalent all around downtown as it's the densest area of town.
The following nice neighborhoods will give you that feel:
Downtown, north of downtown/duck ponds/River Street, South of the Green historic district, Gulf Street/Gulf Beach, Bayview, Morningside, Milford Lawns, Woodmont, Rivercliff, Point Beach, Trumbull Beach, Lexington Green, Great River. Google Maps should be able to point you in the direction of any of those. Just type "<neighborhood> Milford, CT".
Didnt you mention proximity to NY? If thats a big factor, you should limit to the towns on the Metro North train line - Milford and Fairfield. Branford and Guilford are too far away. By the way, IMO, Milford real estate is depressed even compared to other cities in CT, so you will get a good deal.

It's not easy to miss. It's pretty large (it pretty much stretches a full walkable mile). I'm guessing you didn't drive down Main Street if you didn't see anything that looked like a downtown. It has a large green, two churches, a large library, clothing stores, lots of restaurants, a few pubs, bagel shops, etc. The only thing missing from Branford's is the train station (which is 1.5 miles away). It's a little more compact than Milford's, Guilford's and Madison's, but again, if you drove through it, you'd certainly recognize it as a town center.
