I know of 2 HR Specialist/Generalists that were looking for work in New London County. One found a similar position 4 months later in RI and the other is still unemployed 2 years later. The 1st has a college degree and the 2nd does not.

Age has a lot to do with it. I turn 56 next week and can't even get an interview. I have management skills. Friend of mine just turned 57 and can't get hired. He has limited machine shop skills (last job was running a press brake, can load and hit start on a CNC machine but can't program it) and carpentry skills.

A good friend of mine works there and did say they will be keeping about 100 employees in Norwalk. Still, it’s an unfortunate loss. It’s a good company.

Yeah, but that's not limited to Connecticut. Unless you have an exact skills match where there aren't any younger qualified candidates, your resume is going into the trash bin. An older hire is going to skew the demographics of the corporate group insurance plan, particularly in smaller companies. Since they're mostly company-paid in the high wage sectors, you could cost the company more in the increase in the group rate than your total comp. They're not allowed to ask your age on an application but pretty much all online applications insist you put a college graduation date or you can't submit the application. If you have a 1980-something graduation date, you won't make it through the filters.

I'm 60. At this point, I can't get a job unless it's through my personal network where people are looking for exactly my subject matter expertise and skills.

I think now that there is a series of trains that connect Hartford to New Haven then onto NYC it will certainly help the CT economy especially in the more northern part of the state. What does everyone else think.

It's not only with companies that might move in. Maybe more New Yorkers can afford a weekend place in CT and have access to it without a car? That would spur some economic activity.

Turns out they are going to World Trade Center downtown. That would make for an awful commute to/from Connecticut. I hope your friends are among the ones that get to stay in Connecticut because otherwise they will have to move or face a very long commute.

I do wonder what managers think when they make these types of decisions. Do they realize the cost of such a drastic move? Not only is their rent doubling, they likely will need to pay to relocate employees. You are talking millions of dollars for exactly what? IF they had located to the Grand Central area they could argue that it is commutable from Connecticut but downtown is questionable at best. I think they may lose a lot of their current talent with this move. Jay
