Well, good point. Is a software "engineer" really a QA person? Or is that a term used to satisfy conditions for getting H1B? You know, that talent does not exist in US? If wages are indicative of skill and availability then why would lowly QA people getting H1s? 75k is pretty much dirt in one of most expensive areas of country. The answer is very clear. H1Bs are brought in to provide cheap tech labor. 40% of all H1Bs entering US end up between Philly and Boston. Plethora to pull from in CT. To use another ST term, the prime directive of big corps is to drive wages down by misclassifying labor and abusing H1. You seem to think prevailing wages, for all workers, are somehow not tied to this.

Debating the merits of employment of foreigners is off topic to this forum. Let’s stick to Connecticut’s economy. JayCT, Moderator

Jay, I don't want to push bounds but there are questions about Infosys in particular and their potential use of H1B's instead of hiring CT Residents or even trying to recruit other US Citizens/Residents into their new space which does somewhat affect CT's economy and growing presence in the new tech spheres popping up. But if considered off topic please delete.

I highly doubt Infosys is going to hire a load of H1Bs for a few reasons, first off there are going to be numerous client relations and sales positions from what their pressings say, which also claim they are gearing towards the US market with US clients and subs. As well there are likely RFA requirements for governmental work.

Also though, many hiring companies specifically shy away from those hires unless absolutely needed because the work is literally hit or miss. Often times it takes a decent amount of work by more experienced engineers and programmers to fix copy pasted work with no documentation (a job I know all too well).

Discussing Infosys is fine. I just don’t want the discussion to veer off H1B employment. JayCT, Moderator

Pratt and Whitney announced a retirement package yesterday. It is the first one offered in a long time and is for people 58 years old and over with at least 10 years of service. Apparently there are a number of mid and senior-level employees in their late 60s and early 70s who continue to stay on which is impacting opportunities for mid-career employees to advance. There currently are over 500 open positions and the company is not presenting it as staff reduction plan. Pratt has had difficulty attracting young qualified people to fill entry and mid-career positions. Given the demographic they are looking to encourage to leave it is likely some would leave CT if they take the package but it could also bring many new, younger, families into CT as well because it would provide a lot of good-paying job opportunities for mid-career job seekers.

Show me the thousands first. I still recall similar bluster over Malloy's failed First Five.

This is an ACTUAL loss of 150 well-paying jobs with a great parent corp.
