Reduce taxes. Get mill rates more in line with where MA is. Work to make the the capital city more of a destination and place to be like Boston is. Bring in a professional sports team or two.

As we have discussed before, some economists believe that a number of people in our state have left the workforce. Because of our affluence, we are able to do that more than other states. That would explain both the drop in employment and the severe labor shortage. The article linked below discusses the great need for manufacturing employees in our state.

It’s funny but I’ve realized that I know several that have left. One family member is a young mother of four who was a waitress for extra money. Covid hit and she realized that the money was not really needed so she stopped working. She keeps getting calls from her former employer to come back but she doesn’t need the money (her husband is a successful businessman) so she refuses. Why chance exposure to Covid-19 to her and her family? Just not worth it.

Then there’s another family member who was a manager nearing retirement who stopped working without filing for Social Security or touching his retirement funds yet. He and his wife live now on her salary and their regular savings. How do the numbers reflect this situation? He too gets calls to go back to work. I know a couple that were teachers and a friend in the same position.

Finally I’d like to tell you that another young very close family member with five years work experience decided to change jobs about a month ago. She immediately applied to four jobs in her field (social medicine). The following week she had four virtual interviews and the week after that had four job offers.

The thing is the most lucrative offer was a significant promotion working for a prestigious major healthcare system. It came with a 40% increase in salary. The woman interviewing her however advised her to ask for more money, noting that the company tries to lowball potential employees and to hold out for another 10%. She has done that and is waiting for their formal offer.

The point is that with just five years experience, she is being considered for jobs that normally go to workers with at least 10 more years experience. Those workers just aren’t there so significantly improved opportunities are opening up for young workers like never before. That’s just crazy. Jay
Agreed. CT's worldyness, affluence, and financial standing among it's residents are on full display here. We're the highest in personal income, when to dispose of it and when to use it responsibly during trying times. It's all a testament to it's financial fortitude and ability to manage adversity. We're the standard bearer. Even without infallible Boston within our borders. It's great to see some other States following in our footsteps.

CT doesn't get to bring in major sports franchises. That's up to the private sector leagues and teams themselves to decide.

Why would Connecticut want that? Boston is over crowded and overpriced. It’s mass transportation network is inadequate for the number of people using it, making commuting even a couple miles a living hell. People falling all over each other to wait 2 hours or more for a table at a mediocre restaurant. Or stand in line for an hour to see a movie or show. Or trip over people in local parks on a nice day. Not fun in my book.

The other option is to let sprawl run rampant and destroy the little open space and character we have left. Connecticut is already the fourth most densely populated state in the country. Why would we want more people here? I like going to really good restaurants without long waits. I like going to a movie at the last minute and still getting a good seat. And I like going to one of our many beautiful parks and enjoy their beauty without crowds. Much nicer. Jay

We can't. We consistently under-perform not just the nation, but New England. The pattern is long-term.

Underperform on what metrics?

Job and GDP growth %.

We are amongst the worst in recovering jobs lost at the start of the pandemic.

I've had an open position for months. Haven't seen many applicants. Hearing the same thing from other business owners...

Here we go yet again.

Who cares about growth? That is just a measure of change and means little when you are already at the top economically. Connecticut is No. 5 for per capita Gross Domestic Product and No. 1 in Household Income, Family
Income and Disposable Income. That affluence likely has meant that people here don’t need to work, thus we have sluggish job recovery and a severe labor shortage. If anything that is admirable.

We are not even on short lists for new teams or teams needing to relocate. It's safe to assume the Whalers will be our only pro team ever, and that is acceptable even for this sports fan.
