Looking back on this almost two years later and laughing. Anyone that is in the position I was and considering moving from NYC to Stamford - do it. Yes, the commute is an adjustment, but its nowhere near as dramatic as what was described here. It's more than manageable. I can count on one hand how many times I haven't gotten a seat. I'm sure there are delays but there not enough of an issue for me to even really notice it. The "seats caked with dirt" are only the old trains, which I've hardly had to ride on and they aren't really that bad.

The pros of Stamford - space, quiet, being settled far outweigh the cons of the commute and even at that, compared to any other suburban commute it's probably so much better since you're just sitting on a train anyway and not battling traffic.

Six year follow up - I’m happy to report to whoever scolded me on this thread for “not planning my move well”, that I got a job in Stamford last year and now enjoy a traffic free 12 minute commute!

While I still say the commute is do-able (more so if you have stable, not super long hours - which I didn’t), I am glad to have put it behind me after 5 years of doing it.

That's awesome. Out of curiosity, were you deducted for NYC income tax (even though you live in CT but worked in NYC)? If so, did you get any portion of it back at return time?

I've often flirted with the idea of a NYC job. Higher salary but rough commute from where I live (Stratford which is a nearly 2 hour commute). However, my industry allows for Working at Home for which I take advantage of -- I currently only drive into Hartford 1-2 times/week. Grinding out the NYC commute 1-2/week wouldn't be terrible depending on the job and compensation.

You only pay NYC tax if you live there.

I work in NYC and pay NY state tax which is a smidge higher than CT, so I pay zero CT income tax.

1-2 days a week from Stratford is totally doable. I do 3-4 on average from Milford. My hours are reasonable though.

Maybe it’s my income bracket?

I would speak to someone about this honestly. I had a friend who did a telecommute for an NYC based company and he got screwed come tax time because the state of NY did a "convenience versus necessity test" and found/stated that since the work could have been done in NYC, he owed NYC & NY state taxes for all of his income.

I'm a high income bracket and had to claim both NY and CT when I worked in the former and lived in the latter. Tax season, it pretty much ended up a wash, but according to my accountant I still had to do it.

I would be careful, so you don't get audited later on!

CT doesn't have reciprocity, like NJ does...but a lot of people think CT does (I did, at first!)

I use TurboTax and it figures all that out. I still file for CT but don’t owe anything.
