We are moving to Farmington. I read about route 6 accidents and views by people saying this is dangerous road to travel. I want to get a good opinion from people who live in Farmington on how this route is for my daily commute to Hartford.

Are you talking about Route 6 west of I-84, out towards Bristol? The reason I ask is that I-84 from Farmington to Manchester is also designated Route 6 so you may also be asking about the I-84 portion as well. As far as roads go, Route 6 in Farmington is busy with about 24,000 vehicles per day but it is no more dangerous than any other similar road in this country. I certainly would not avoid living off of it. Jay

I am taking about route 6 East that puts you to 1 84 East at exit 38 to travel to Hartford CT. I read about dangerous curvy stretches of that road and accidents.

Living in Farmington, I would say that CT 4 between CT 10 and I-84, and I-84 itself in the West Hartford area, have more dangerous curves that US 6 does. The 2 big sweeping curves on that stretch of US 6 (from Bristol line to I-84) are no more dangerous than any average highway.

I live in Farmington and I have commuted to Hartford and to Newington on Route 6 to 84 (which is the way you would most likely go because otherwise you'd go through city traffic in Hartford). I'm puzzled about why people would say it's especially dangerous. Route 6 is basically a country road with very little traffic except for a teensy bit around rush hour in the evening coming off 84 and then going down into Farmington. (I googled it because I was curious and I found two serious accidents reported since 2011, one caused by an 86 year old and another by a 24 year old - I don't mean to insult anyone but these are demographic groups perhaps more likely to be involved in accidents than others might be . . .)

umm, Route 6 is extremely busy. And, even more so once you get past Route 177 and move towards Bristol and into Bristol where you have Wal-Mart and all the big box stores. Even when it's not rush hour, it's not an easy drive with all the lights. (I lived in Avon and the closest 24 Hour CVS was in Bristol, though the 24 Hour Walgreens in Simsbury was a bit closer when I lived in Avon)

That said, I never found it particularly dangerous.

I found Route 175 in Newington far more dangerous - I personally witnessed 5-6 accidents myself in the stretch between Fenn Rd and Main Street while living in town, and was witness to the aftermath of at least a dozen more in my 7 years in Newington. (I think they've made a few improvements to 175 since I moved out 10+ years ago, though)

I wouldn't call it dangerous, but the backup around the I-84 exit on Rt 4 going past the Hill-stead Museum is just a brutal mess that is almost always backed up, time of day doesn't matter.

Yes - I was up in that area a few weeks ago, and ran into a big backup on a Saturday afternoon.

Any high speed road that doesn't have a guardrail separating oncoming traffic is very dangerous. You literally have 2 feet separating you from a most likely fatal head on accident. All it takes is a moment of not paying attention, hitting some ice, an animal running in front of a car and other things and you have yourself a head on collision at 50mph. People generally don't' walk away from an accident like that. In my opinion any road that has a speed limit over 45 mph should have a guardrail separating traffic.

Route 6 spans all the way to the eastern side of the state. This is where much of the notoriety of danger comes from. People are driving even faster out that way and the speed limit is 50 with people routinely doing 60mph. Think what happens if someone runs into you head on at that speed?
