This is a little off topic but it should be a warning to our state, RIDOT was forced to close I-195 Westbound in Providence due to severely deteriorated structure elements on the Washington Bridge there. That is one of the busiest highways in the state. It is anticipated that repairs will take several months to complete.

According to this article the bridge was inspected in July and no problems were found. I find that to be unbelievable. Deterioration like this doesn’t happen overnight.

Anyway I hope this will lead to a renewed effort to carefully inspect other bridges in R.I. as well as our state.

This week Jim Cameron calls out our State lawmakers for not using our state’s mass transit system. He has a point.

Sky Harbour Group, the private and corporate jet service company, has entered into an agreement to build a $30 million jet facility at Bradley International Airport. That is great for the airport and shows the importance of greater Hartford.

Bradley seems very busy lately. I went thru there 4 times in the last couple weeks and it was packed. Compared to Pittsburgh where I flew into it was unbelievable how many more people were at the much smaller Bradley.

There definitely is a need for better Orlando service. Jet Blue has eliminated their morning flights to Orlando which only leaves Southwest and it’s always full.

I like the John Wayne flights as well. I have an old friend in Orange County. Maybe we will get together more now that there’s direct flights.

I flew Breeze this month to Pitt. I upgraded to the more legroom for about the cost of adding a checked bag, and thought it was a good deal. If you go with the legroom I think breeze is a good option other then paying for drinks on board.

We are taking a Jetblue flight to Orlando next Month and I wish they still had morning flights but were going for 7 days with kids and a direct flight was the most important thing for us.

Tweed new terminal and that expansion cleared by FAA. Haven't seen the particular plans but hope the new terminal has amenities.

The new Tweed terminal is supposed to be a significant upgrade but still small. It will have 6 gates instead of 3, several food and store places instead of the current single cafe-sandwich counter. Now that the runway will be extended, triple the parking, and increased terminal space, it could mean more airlines and cities will fly from New Haven. The new terminal will be reached by a new access road and entrance on the East Haven side, so no longer through residential streets.

According to this, the state is leaving a lot of federal money unspent this year.

What people fail to realize is that there is a LOT of planning and design/engineering before construction can begin on projects. You just don’t go out and point to a road and tell the contractors to “build it.”

The state has a large backlog of projects but they are in varying stages of design. Plus CTDOT needs staff to administer these projects and that takes time. Fortunately both are happening as fast as possible.

The DOT is really lacking on putting out projects to bid. From my understanding, the Bond commission has approved something like $5b that could be spent but this year they are only issuing $875m.

The yearly look ahead is concentrated in August and September which kind of stinks for contractors when you have all the jobs being bid in 2 months and the rest of the year is slow.

Work has quietly begun on CTDOT’s massive $500 million reconstruction of the I-91/I-691/Route 15 interchange in Meriden. The massive 6 year project is designed to eliminate congestion associated with the limited lanes within the interchange. It involves a lot of nightwork in order to minimize impacts on traffic. Thats why the timeline is so long. Great news.
