A heartless Republican who gave you no choice?

You as well as the Democrats in this state need to be honest to yourself and to others about politics. The Democrats have an agenda and the Republicans have an agenda. The Democratic agenda is to spend spend spend and raise taxes for more spending. This is what they do and this is what you get.

Had CT supported Republicans there would be a different story in CT. We would have had some spending cuts and a moe reasonable budget. But NOO!!! We have a state legislature that is overwhelmingly Democratic and a progressive liberal Governor. The voters chose to back Democrats 100% of the time.

NOW OWN IT CT YOU VOTED FOR IT NOW REAP WHAT YOU SOW!!!!!!!!!!

Trust me we will be having the same conversation 4 years from now when the state is bankrupt and Democrats will still be making the same excuses. You could literally be at the gates of hell and you would come up with the same excuses. This is why states go bankrupt, people keep putting their heads in the sand and refuse to face reality.

What about many of the less progressive states that will have to deal with running out of water? Some of this is nature but many places are building way beyond what will be sustainable in any way. Or places like the Plains States that are seeing that a bubble burst right now and many of their formerly padded budgets are looking bleak in the same way CT is in the next 10 years (except CT has more reliable revenue streams).

Again, CT isn't perfect but it hardly is alone with issues.

I keep reading that this new budget will lower my taxes? Do they mean mine as in a suburb of hartford or do they mean mine as in we'll take from the weathly suburbs and give to the poor citiies?

Can anyone explain?

It will even out the distribution of tax burdens. So, if you're in a poor city with high taxes, your taxes will (presumably) go down. Sales tax will go up for everybody, but it will be offset in poorer places with a reduction in property taxes.

Why do we need to distribute ANYTHING? We don't live in a socialist society. it will not help the poor in the Cities. Car tax, it will reduce it, but many of the poor don't own the homes. So it will not help relieve property tax on them. It will help the landlords but I almost guarantee we will NOT see a reduction in rents. Meanwhile, the suburbs might take a hit.

There is a new tax called "Unitary Tax" which taxes corporations that operate in multiple states. Which,I could be wrong, is basically every large Corporation we have in CT. Maybe this will be the bump they need to consolidate all operations in CT instead of having operations spread throughout the Country.

..and Keno..more gambling propped up by the lower income earners.

Money is not redistributed to help the poor. Almost none of it actually gets to the poor. The poor understand the mechanics of government much better than anyone else because they are directly affected and witness the mechanics on a day to day basis. While I have savings and am retried, I had a chance to witness first hand the machinations of the Medicaid and government health system. A joke that exists for the benefit of the medical industry and government. It has nothing to do with health.

Wouldn't this encourage them to move out of Ct instead of consolidate in CT?

We're all interdependent.

The poorer cities aren't walled off from the 'burbs. Those cities often house companies, provide services, etc, that you can't access in Simsbury (for example). My heating oil comes from Norwalk, and uses Norwalk's roads to get to me. I use the Amtrack station in Bridgeport, etc...

We need some level of redistribution-- as there always has been-- to make sure that poor children and elderly don't live in squalor and that young adults don't turn to crime in greater numbers.

It's interesting-- I was watching a documentary on urban planning last night that included perspectives from other countries. In Brasilia they're taking on projects to increase the dignity of the poor-- by providing safe, paved walking paths in highly trafficked areas. They're dealing with traffic by encouraging bicycling. People have an understanding that the poor need assistance. Here they scream SOCIALISIM because they're afraid the meager amount of their taxes that helps the poor will prevent them from buying a new SUV.

I'm not saying taxes should be paid in municipalities where you don't live, however to pretend there is no relation is kind of silly.

Also-- poor pay rent. Rent is effected by property taxes.

It is kind of hard to vote for a candidate that belittles and blames a group of people that are losing their jobs because a large corporation is closing their facility. If he is stupid and arrogant enough to do that after being blamed for pillaging a company down in Georgia, how can you expect anyone to vote for him. It was a bad choice for the Republicans and voters had to choose the lesser of two evils. Jay
