Outside of Fairfield county, it is less costly then about 80% of California, the Hartford area is less then Portland Oregon, and about the same compared to Salem and Eugene Or. Seattle price wise for real estate is about the same as Boston. With COL higher then most of CT.

Las Vegas is about the same as Hartford for real estate prices as is Phoenix. Greater Chicago cost of living wise is about the same as Hartford, but housing prices are more.

In Alaska, cost of living is higher then most of CT-real estate in Anchorage about the same as greater Hartford.

Greater NY- LI, Central and northern NJ all ,are much more costly then most of CT. Washington DC, NoVa all much higher for real estate. Florida- Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Sarasota, all much higher housing and insurance for a home.

Lets make sure before we say how 'costly' things are here- there are many other regions much higher- provincialism sometimes clouds facts. Sure CT is higher then Indiana, Texas, South Carolina and Tennessee, but lets compare apples and apples, not apples and oranges.

Thank you Sky for putting it so elequontly.

I lived in CA for 30+ yrs, was born and raised in Santa Barbara <blech>
While i'm sure every state has its variable costs of living, I am one that believes more in the quality of life overall vs the quantity of materialistic things such as fancy homes, cars, designer clothes etc... for me, I struggled painstakinly to raise my first child as a single mom back in the 80s all because I just HAD to stay in Santa barb, it was ALL so phoney, the people, the area.
I LOL now that it is considered a 'resort' vs a place where anyone dare consider raising a family with respect for culture and diversity among decent human beings.

i really wouldn't recommend moving to terryville (maybe the outlying sections of plymouth if you don't plan on sending your kids to public school.)

it's true that it is a more affordable area than most places in connecticut, but it's a hick town with a lot of decay and really nothing positive to offset that. it's a pretty depressing place to raise children in.

I think you said it. If you like a place where people value genuineness and integrity Ct is the place for you. It has a healthy diversity as well, but a reserved diversity; you have to dig in and discover this for yourself; diversity is not paraded around here like muscles are on muscle beach.

Here people value privacy and quiet peaceful neighborhoods; all in all a safe and reliable place to raise children.

It is New England so be ready to deal with the challenges of that(you could for years next door to your neighbor, and never meet them!! Its happenned here in Ct.) But all in all, you seem to value quality vs. quantity and quality of life is definately rated high here.

Good Luck

Retail and Casinos have been CTs' only growth areas. My former Ct employers had 2,000 Ct employees in mid 1980s, and today, employ 46 in Ct in 2008, and over 1,000 in other states.

UTC CEO has stated publicly he'll never allow that corp to add a single CT job in future. With exception of Sikorsky which adds/deletes by individual contract.

Sad.
